Show Lakeside Resurrect hunting memories Road kills of deer skyrockei Deer highway mortality has skyrocketed during the past decade, and appears to be headed only higher unless something is done to stop it, according to Davis County conservation officer Allan Hash. Deer killed on Davis County highways this year totalled 142 in (the count goes from June to June each year). Thats more than 15 times the number of deer hit by cars in 1977, and 23 more than were killed all of last year. The high number of road kills not only wastes a valuable natural resource, but also annually costs motorists thousands of dollars on car repair. mid-Mar- ch Fortunately the Division of Wildlife Resources has. a plan a limited hunt to be conducted at some time during the summer in four separate and very restricted areas. ' Spring is not the time of year most hunters reminisce about the feel under foot of fallen autumn leaves or the smell of gun oil. But it is the time of year sportsmen should think of everything they have disliked about their recent Utah deer hunts, according to Allan Hash, conservation officer for the states Division of Wildlife Resources. Spring, you see, is the time of the DWRs annual public hearings on big game hunts. The big game boards public meeting for the Odgen area is scheduled for 7 p.m. on May 9 in the community rooms of the Odgen Chamber of Commerce in the Odgen City Mall. This is it. If you or someone representing your views doesnt make it to this or another area meeting, then dont complain when the hunt roles around and the states hunting proclamation runs contrary to what you want. Every year I hear complaints from hunters when I stop them at checkpoints during the hunting season, but when these public meetings come around they dont bother to come, Hash said. Its time for those hunters to get the lead out of their ammo belts and voice their complaints the only place it will do any good. I know there are problems, and Im the first one to admit it. Im the one out there in the field who gets all the complaints of the irate hunters, Hash said. The second weekend of the hunt last year at my checkpoint in Farmington Canyon I checked 499 hunters and among all of them they had killed only 14 . 3C DWR board readies big game policy Review sports editor Mon.-Fr- April 23, 1986 Public meeting set GARY HATCH OGDEN Review, Wednesday, EXPIRES t Sp3Ujj DaytoiaXIreSmDaytoiQTiresSEaPaytoittrire Read The Classified hunting, and has been proposed for this year only, but could be an effective way to sharply reduce o accidents, Hash said. The biggest problem areas in Davis County are the four draws along state highway 89 starting at the Cherry Hill area and going north to the county line. The objective of the hunt is to deer-aut- eliminate the deer population from those draws, Hash said. The deer in the county are divided into two herds. The deer in these draws are not the same deer sportsmen hunt every year, Hash said. These deer, for the most part, are nuisance deer that live in the draws year round, eat the shrub- bery and plants of area residents and as often as not wind up in a heap alongside the highway. The specifics of the hunt have not yet been decided, but 55 permits will likely be given out and since the hunting will be near houses, those proficient with archery tackle and buckshot will be best suited for the hunt. one-ha- lf Choose your weapon Hunters would hunt with one weapon only and during the time allotted 83 and 84.
