Eight-month-o- ld A Keilie, daughter of Wayne and Rachelle Burrell and granddaughter of Roy Mayor Wayne Kimbcr, was born with a liver disorder called biliary atresia. With this condition, the bile ducts in the liver do not form. Therefore food is not broken up and no nutrients get to the body so it can develop and grow. After Keilies jaundice condition did not improve, the Primary Childrens Hospital in Salt Lake City performed several tests. It was then determined that Keilie would have to have a new liver. If the transplant is successful, Keilie has an 80 percent chance for a healthy, normal life. Without a transplant, doctors say she probably will not live past 3 years old. The operation would be performed at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb. If a donor is found, the Burrells will leave for Omaha imme- - 'w f j' T Keilie Burrell i diately. Because of Keilies inability to develop at a normal rate, she only weighs 10 pounds. Therefore, her donor must be a newborn who is brain dead but can be kept on a life support system until the operation can be performed. The Burrells need help. It costs from $6,500 to $10,000 to reserve O U U UOh OOO OO "L w u u) v)i U n U g y Q y y jj y Of; : a jet that will fly them to Omaha when the time comes. This will have to be paid out of their pocket unless they can find someone who would donate this service. The Burrells have been told the operation will cost from $100,000 to $400,000. Their health insurance carrier told them this cost is not covered by their company because this is still considered an ANITA KERSEY experimental operation. A trust fund has been set up at the Bank of Utah in Ogden for donations to help Keilie. In the event Keilie does not receive the transplant, the funds will be allocated to other children for help or research of an illness or disease. In the meantime, Keilie waits. She must be fed a special formula that goes directly into her stomach through a tube that is inserted into her nose. Keilies father said Keilie is a happy baby in spite of the discomfort and pain. He told the members of the Layton Chamber of Commerce that several programs are working to keep the Ogden Air Logistics Center rolling along. Saving dollars has been a prime concern, according to McCausland and an innovative program at the base has shown dramatic results in dollar savings as it has provided jobs for many local handicapped residents. In the past it has not been cost effective to take a journeyman worker off his regular job to sort through bolts and screws left at the end of a shift, to sharpen bits, or to wash and sort rags, he said. But thanks to the Command Reach program, those tasks are done by handicapped people hired at wages comparable with the work they are able to do, while saving the government millions of tax dollars. i At the end of a shift, portable containers are filled with the leftover bolts and other excess materials and shipped to the handicapped people in a shelter workshop where they are sorted, boxed, labeled, and shipped back GETA FASTEREAK ON HIGH ENERGY Series 140 WALL PLATE. It is easier to work with people on a local basis if problems arise, and shipping and other costs could be held down, he said.
