Violin Soloist RUTH MALAN KAYSVILLE Utahs biggest problem is its image, Fred S. Ball told members of the Kaysville Chamber of Commerce. Weve got to try to convince people we arent people with our collars on backwards, he said. Inc. Magazine paints a bleak picture of Utah. A sign in a Boston subway says, Dont litter our subway or well send you to Utah. Ball, president of the Salt Lake City Area Chamber of Commerce since 1971, said to improve the job base we must be competi- it ii i second located right next to Layton Hills Mall? Ball said the book Megatrends has helped to change Utahs image. The book lists Salt Lake City as one of the top 10 J American cities for new busi- '.- - ; nesses. A new research industry, a manufacturer of artificial nerves, arteries, and veins, is coming to Utah, making Utah the Rochester of the West, said Ball. An eight-stor-y science building for the study of genetics will soon be built in Salt Lake City. Our economy hasnt ever been better. Our business community used to lead the country in bankruptcies. Now that has been drastically reduced. Our most valuable commodity is our college graduates. Most of them would leave the state, but they are now coming home, he said. Some people complain about outsiders coming in when in reality its Utahns coming home. Utah is the third fastest growing state on the U.S., he said. We have twice as many children here so even if no one moves in we are still going to grow, said Ball. What is good for Kaysville is good for Salt Lake City, the 11th most urbanized area in the country, he said, and then offered some advice to the chamber leaders. Dont crave to be liked. Crave to be respected. You should always have someone mad at you. Then you know you are doing something. We do not require dues because we are not a club. We dont make donations because we are not a charity. We invest in our community and expect a return on our investment. We should be very interested in government, be vocal, said Ball. Have a (chamber of commerce) member at every City Council meeting, be familiar with and be concerned with the economic climate, he advised. The economy will grow 75 percent by your own business growing, not by new business coming in. Put forth a little more effort to make the difference between mediocre and great. Do a little bit more and be a super star, he said. Right now there are 41 Fortune 500 companies looking at Utah.
