Show 2D Lakeside Review, Wednesday, August 21 , 1 985 Utah on the Forefront in Hunter Safety Education Statistically speaking, there is a greater chance of being involved in an automobile accident traveling to your hunting spot than there is of being in a accident while hunting. Even so, many people feel hunting has become as risky for humans as for animals. Thirty-tw- o states, including Utah, have mandatory hunter safety education laws. Utahs programs are on the gun-relat- ed forefront of hunter safety educa- accidents last year. This does not account, though, for the 70 percent of accidents that take place in the home. These accidents can be considered hunting related because they often involve hunting tion. Utahs Lee Kay Hunter Educa- tion Center on the west side of the Salt Lake valley is the only one of its kind in the U.S. Utah also has a hunter safety and shooting sports program built into Utah State Universitys Extension and programs. According to Ed Cornia, Utah hunter safety education coordinator, there were only nine hunting 4-- ed gun-relat- 4-- H 300-35- 4-- H 4-- H guns. Utah law requires anyone under the age of 21 to pass a minimum of 10 hours in a hunter safety education course befoer purchasing a hunting license. Players entering that have an NTRP rating must play in the following divisions: A 4.0 - 4.9, B" 3.0 - 3.9, C 1.0 - 2.9. ' Players without ratings may register as an A, B, or C player. A beginner or novice division will be offered for those who have been playing for 1 year or less; The entry fee is $7 per singles event and $12 per team for doubles events. Tournament July A Labor Day Invitational Slowpitch Softball Tournament sponsored by Stokes Brothers will be held at the Steed Park Complex in Clearfield. The tournament will be a double elimination tournament with all teams guaranteed three games. Applications will be accepted through August 23. Registration fees will be $100 per team. Team sponsor trophies will be awarded the first, second, third and fourth place teams with individual trophies awarded to players on the first and second place teams. Special individual awards will be presented for Tournament MVP, All Tournament Team, Most Home Runs and Leading Hitter. Lay-to- Softball Champions 544-345- Layton City recreation girls junior high league softball play has been completed, with the Piranhas taking both the league and tournament championships. Pat Woodbury and Larry Gam served as the coaches. Mar-shel- Rass-musse- le n, Little League Champs Laytons little league season came to a close with the crowning of two new champions. The minor league had several fine teams, including the National League champion, the Rangers, coached by Gilbert Luna, and the American League champion Bees, coached by Dave Trujillo. This years tournament champion is the Expos, coached by Terry Coburn and Robin Fausett. This team had a record of 26-- 2 for the year. Besides winning the Layton Tournament they won the strongly competative Farmington City Tournament. The team was lead by such players as Carson Cook, Chris Coburn, Chase Strong, Bry Fausett, and Justin Morgan. The action packed Major League Tournament teams were comprised of a field of outstanding young players. ; The National League Champion Cubs, coached by Debbie won the championship from the American League Champion Indians, coached by Dave Eli-so- n, Clearfield.
