This problem is one which takes cooperation between patient and physician for many years, and has Special to the Lakeside Review - The fourth risk factor for develis disease oping coronary artery iin elevated blood pressure which is known officially as hypertension. The first three factors we have discussed are smoking, cholesterol and high fat diet, anxiety and stress. The fifth and final factor to be discussed next time is inactivity. Hypertension is a disease of epidemic proportions with estima- good results. What is an elevated blood pressure? For most adults, it is a pres- sure of 14090 or higher. Children have an elevated blood pressure at lower levels, and elderly people may have pressure a bit higher than 140 and not hypretensive. To understand in simple terms what the blood pressure is, think of the heart as a pump and the circulatory system as a set of tubes through which blood is moved by the action of the pump. When the heart muscle contracts, the pressure in the closed tubes is elevated. This is called the systolic blood pressure and is the higher figure. When the heart muscle is relaxed and the pump is filling, pressure in the system is tions that 45,000,000 Americans have elevated blood pressures and half of these people dont know it. High blood pressure usually gives you no sign that you are sick, so it is a silent disease, a silent killer, if you will. It contributes directly to many deaths each year, deaths from heart failure, and stroke, despite the fact that many people can control blood pressure quite easily and cheaply, and also despite the availability of many medications to treat elevated blood pressure, many people with this ! less. This is called the diastolic pres- sure, or the lower pressure figure. When the pressure is higher, the pump has to work harder to cir- culate the blood through the system. Over time, high pressure' will cause damage in the target organs: heart, brain, kidneys, and the eyes. Target organ damage from elevated blood pressure is largely preventable. The actual causes of high blood pressure in patients are not really known. There are factors, however, which definitely contribute to elevated blood pressure. They include heredity, heavy use of salt, obesity, excessive stress, and in some cases, the use of certain medications such as oral contraceptive pills. BRENDAS PRESCHOOL 2212 E.
