Four players from the state in two age divisions were named to western regional the teams of the United States Soccer Federation. And one Lakeside area player was close to making the regional team for the second year in a row, but was again denied. Before this year, no Utah player had ever made a national-calibe- r team, but three players from 13-sta- te Agnello also tried out for the team last year, but failed to make regional tryouts, held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center at Colorado Springs. Brent Heckel and Tommy Angelos from Woods Cross High School and Keith Byars from Bountiful made the cut. Henry Irhig, Woods Cross, also made the first cut for the under team. Davis High schools Chris tried out for the team, and despite a very he was the strong- showing leading scorer with five goals and he four assists in six games did not make the cut. south Davis County made the under 152 team. That means the three are among the top 26 players in 13 western states, said Utah Youth Soccer Association coach Billy McNicol, one of coaches at the USSF tryouts. One south Davis County player made the first cut for the under V2 team and has a chance to be one of the final 8 players on that team, McNicol added. Because four players from this state made the team where none ever had before, Utah was named the most improved state at the the cut then also. Yet, McNicol says not to worry. I think Chris is the premier player at his position (forward) in the state, McNicol said. It was not a case of Chris not being a very good player. He is. But there were three other forwards who were unanimous choices, and those players are excpetional. Two of them are being recruited night and day by college coaches. They are definite pro material, McNicol said. 17'2-year-o- ld 1 Ag-nel- lo 17Vi-year-o- ld 1 - And it was to Agnellos disadvantage that all three of those players were on his team, so the likelihood of his making the cut along with them was not very good. Another factor weighing against Agnello may have been that McNicol was his coach. It may have actually been a disadvantage to Chris being on my team, because I was probably harder on him than I was on the others. I couldnt allow favoritism, McNicol said. Agnello still has another year left at Davis High, and has a good chance of being invited to try out for the regional team next year, provided he continues to improve. Its important for Chris not to remember that he is not good enough, but that he is not good enough yet, McNicol said. As long as he keeps that yet in there, hell be okay. If he continues to show improvement next year, hell have a good chance. Those other three players are older and they wont be back next year, he added.
