Show T , 2B - Lakeside Review, Wednesday, July 24, 1985 f ? Letters to Editor of innocence apply to SLAM? Charges Not True, Unfair Where is there any evidence to support the allegations made against SLAM and Davis County law officials in the letter we refer to? Finally, the letter states that child abuse needs to be stopped. Review Editor SLAM is an organization of volI would like to answer unfair unteers trying to do just that! and untrue charges leveled What are you doing to stop it? against S.L.A.M. (Societys K. Lund League Against Molestation) in a Ogden recent letter you published by D. Member Societys League David Thomas of Sunset. Against Molestation The title vigilante given to SLAM implies that we work outside the law - FALSE. The truth is we work within the law as advocates for sexually molested children through education, court monitoring of abuse cases, and urging the laws protecting and defending our children be upheld. In most cases involving sexual Review Editor abuse of children, there are famiIn your article of July 3rd, Lie Detector Tests Arouse Controversy . identified pedophile - that of attacking ... harassing ... victims and witnesses; attacking the reputation and personal lives of investigating officers; attacking the motives of the prosecutor... SLAM strongly urges anyone who suspects a child has been molested to immediately contact the police and Social Services that is the law! However, we have NEVER pressured any law officials into a shoddy investigation, as stated in the letter, nor in , any way interfered with police work. In the Sunset case referred to by Mr. Thomas, we were not aware of the case until after the suspect had been investigated and arrested. However, the investigation was hampered by friends of the accused. One friend testified in court that he had tried to stop the investigation. In this same case, the testimony of two experts in child sexual abuse that the accused did molest the children still stands. The childrens testimony has never changed. When charges are dropped for any reason, does that mean the child victims can now remove the trauma they have suffered from their minds? Dr. Roland C. Summit from Harbor UCLA Medical Center states: If a respectable reasonable adult is accused of assaultive behavior by . perverse an uncertain, emotionally dis-- ; traught child, most adults will fault the child. Shame on those people who add to the heavy burden carried by a molested child by calling himher a liar, simply because they cant face the fact that nice people molest children." in the letter j. thatThe admonition every man is innocent until I proven guilty is certainly true. ; After a trial, a hung jury ' and charges dropped due to a lie detector test, the ac-- ; I cused was never found guilty., or innocent! In this case, the testimonies of the nationally renowned medical experts from Primary Childrens Medical Center still stand: that the children were indeed molested. In addition, there is the testimony of the detective, who swore under oath in court that the accused made a partial confession. Even the child defense witnesses made it abundantly clear they had been the recipients of at least hugging and kissing by the accused that they did not like or want. A study of 207 criminals used to take lie detector tests showed that 36 percent of those who LIED were wrongly passed by the examiners. Pedophiles (those who are sexually aroused by children) frequently are able to pass lie detector tests due to their psychological denial mechanism. But due to a lie detector test given in circumstances NOT in full accord with the agreement by the county attorneys office, the charges in this case were dropped despite all the evidence presented in the trial. All we really have proof of is that the accused can pass a lie ded tector test given under conditions (ie. the county attorneys office did not have the opportunity to be present or input on the questions agreed to). The older of the two victims was willing, ready and waiting to take a lie detector test, and they would not agree to it! Why not? One can only presume the little girls test would also result in a pass and the accused would be back to square one! In response to the attacks on the police, volunteer workers, and the victims and their family by the accused and his supporters, I wonder why some feel their primary defense is to attack others?
