Show 2C Lakeside Review North, Wednesday, July 18, 1984 County 84 Cherry Crop 40 to 50 Percent Lower a RUTH MALAN Review Correspondent " It's cherry picking time again in Davis County and pickers can be seen in the orchards harvest--- ing a crop of cherries. But the cherry crop in the '1 county is 40 to 50 percent smaller than that of last se&son, said local orchard owners. ? Pollination was really good r last year, said Frank Storey, a Kaysville fruit grower. Because of the cooler weather in April and May the bees didnt pollinate. Weather is awfully critical. With fewer cherries we hope they will be bigger this year." Fruit Heights orchard owner Glenn Manning said that most of his cherry crop was wiped out in an April frost. Some cherries were harvested last week while others wont ripen for another Week. Most of the orchards in the area have been owned by families-fogenerations, said Mary Tal- . bot. Mrs. Talbot and her husband George own an orchard in Kaysville. She has been in the fruit business all of her life. Although their crop is not as large as last years, most of their cherries will go to commercial buyers. Eighty to 90 percent are shipped to New York to be used in fruit cocktail. The Talbots also grow apples and peaches on their 35 acres. Storey bought his orchard in 1968 as a speculation investment. I found out those green things get ripe and turn red and we could sell them," hq said. Storey has between 800 and 1,000 cherry trees and 300 to 400 apricot trees producing fruit. He planted 90 new trees this year. He said he tries to plant new trees each year. Apricots are only at 30 to 40 percent of the 1983 crop. A lot of people have sold their land, because they cant make money in it, he said, lt costs money to produce good fruit. Storey used to sell his fruit to a but now markets it all at his roadside fruit stand. Refrigeration in his fruit stand keeps the fruit at approximately 40 degrees. Although the Glenn Manning orchard in Fruit Heights has' been in the family for generations, Beth Manning doubts if any of her children will have an interest in it. The fruit industry is on the decline, she said. Some of the Manning fruit is retailed at a roadside business while the majority is shipped through brokers to the east. The bringing price is real low, with the price for, fresh being about the same as last year, said Mrs. Manning. The commercial price has remained the same for years, said Mrs. Talbot. We have a full crop of peaches this year, said Mr$. Manning, who has approximately 800 peach trees. The original William Butcher farm in Fruit Heights was divided into four parcels and given to the children. The Alden Burton family still owns part of that farm. He and his wife Nora have harvested fruit there for 42 years. Most of their fruit is sold commercially but they do have cherries for retail customers to pick their own.
