When he makes model cars, he redesigns them so they look the way he wants them to look. The same for school projects. None of the suggested industrial arts assignments hit the spot so Stott decided to build a bicycle. But it had to be unique, like a bike built out of chains. I got the idea from a bunch of lowriders driving down the street in California. One of them had a steering wheel made out of chain, said Stott. A steering wheel is one thing, but a whole bike? When Don told me his ideal I was curious to see if it could be done, said Vern Barker, his industrial arts teacher at Roy Junior High School. His fellow students were even more skeptical. They said it wouldnt work. That chains were too weak, said Stott. Stott drew the design, but never bothered with formal measurements. He just laid out the 38 logging chain used to build the frame,, forks and handlebar and moved it around until he liked the way it looked. From past experience, Stott knew an acetylene weld would not be strong enough so he used an arc weld. Each link, except for the handlebars, was welded on four sides. I thought two welds on the handlebars would be enough until they collapsed on me, said Stott. The assembly went smoothly, but trouble came when he tried to ride his creation. What was supposed to resemble a chopper, suddenly took on the dimensions of a lowrider. The weight of a rider caused the chains to sag. To remedy the problem, Don added braces. Although braces solved die ag problem, the bike is still a challenge to ride. It doesnt have brakes and because of its design is almost impossible to turn. I had to learn to ride it. You just have to overpower where it wants to go, said Stott. Aside from having a bike that is even scarcer than a Cabbage Patch doll, Stott also has awards resulting from his chariot of chains. He was named the outstanding industrial arts student f?r 1983-8- 4 at Roy Junior High and received the 1983-8- 4 scholarship award in industrial arts. Not content to rest on his laurels, Stott plans to rebuild the bike. I want it to look like a chopper the way I planned it in the beginning.
