Would they accomplish the same thing? Should I do BONNIE both? Is SMITH . summer a good time to start or should I give them a break for the summer and start in the fall? Could you please answer this before school is out because I need to decide what to do. I cant afford very much. Thanks. B.J. Dear B.J., Summer school can be fun and w tion - children who are behind already fight a homework overload nine months of the year. Remediation is helpful any time, but some times are more effective than others, depending on the needs of the child. For skill building, summer is ideal because the child can be pulled back to hisher level and progress at hisher own speed without pressure to keep up with assigned school homework. Because of this, summer is a fantastic time for skill remediation. prevent boredom, but for remeit doesnt hold a dial catch-up- " candle to a good tutor. A summer school program is basically a repeat of the regular school situation. Often the ratio is better, but there still exists a class or group situation. Some kids really enjoy summer school but generally, if the child did not progress much during the school year, dont expect great things to happen during summer school either. Tutoring, on the other hand, if it is done correctly, is totally geared to an individual childs needs. Specific problems and skill needs can be identified and worked on. If the tutor is good, this will logically be more effective for remedial purposes than summer school. Having a child take summer school and tutoring simultaneously is possible but not really necessary. A good tutor will have the child doing specific homework daily to build the missing skills and fill in the holes. A child need not be over loaded with homework from both summer school and tutoring during their, summer vaca Children who cannot retain information are in a slightly different situation. While summer tutoring can provide extensive repetition to slowly build retention of skills, this does not nec- essarily help them survive school classes. These kids learn the information in class, often cannot remember it by the time theyre doing homework at night, and rarely, if ever, remember it by the time the chapter test is given. (I am assuming that the child behind in math is doing fine in everything else. If heshe is not, a good tutor could tell you what adjustments to make in these suggestions).
