His literature research suggested that scientist have not been able to ihtrease, carbon concentrations in plants I elected to use sweet corn as my experimental seeds because corn grows rapidly in green houses. Deficiencies show up rapidly and it is not a nitrogen fixing plant so it is completely dependent on fertilizers and water applications," said Ashmead. He found that increased carbon in plants did favorably effect plant growth. Such an effect has never been reported in scientific literature, he said. Other awards Ashmead received on his project included; first place exhibit, first place oral report, Army Excellence, NASA Award, Air Force Award, and an invitation to compete in the Na- - ' te Review Correspondent - KAYSVILLE I, t.V set out to I see if carbon and polyphosphate .had an effect on plant growth. ;This has never before been ' done," said Stephen Ashmead, a winner of two science fairs. Ashmead, a junior at Davis .High School, entered his first science fair while in junior high. He recently competed in the Davis County Science Fair and the Weber State College Regional Science Fair, winning a trip to compete in the International Science Fair in Columbus, Ohio. For the past three summers, I have been involved in agriculture crop research at Aberdeen,: Idaho. My objectives have been to increase crop yields and, if possible, quality as well, f have ; worked with potatoes, small and sugar beets," said .grains "v Ashmead. His project The Role of Carbon - Clearfield FFA Gets Top State Speech Honor a' , ' : val Research Competition, He took second place overall in the botany catagory in the Weber State Regional Fair,; the Eastman Kodak Award for best use of photography and another trip to the international science fair.1 VW ; X ' , The ClearCLEARFIELD field Chapter FFA attended state convention at Utah State University. Students competed speaking, parliamentary procedure and the FFA creed contest. Stephanie Landes received the state winning proficiency award in nursery operations. Allison Allred was also a state winner in extemporanous speaking. Tauna Blair received second place in prepared speaking, and David Freestone received third place in the creed contest. Also, the chapter and winning parliamentary team consisting of David Paice, chairman; Sue Thurgood; Kurdell Cook; Allen Schellhase; and Stephen Findlay, received fourth place honors. The chapter was honored in receiving a bronze award for its Building of America Commun-tie- s project. David Paice and Dennis Patterson also received the State Farmer Degree. :; Ashmead said judges had com-- : mented that his project was equivalent to a doctorate project. He has been invited to publish his research and is planning to apply for a patent. Ashmead is enrolled in an advanced experimental research class at Davis High. Tim Hunt the instructor of the class said that, "Stephen is very capable. He works very independently in the class. I think he has excellent chances of winning at the international fair. "Stephen is the kind of student every teacher hopes for.
