DeBoer has had work experience in broadcasting, teaching in the public and LDS school systems, and has worked in bank operations and real estate lending. He currently owns and operates DeBoers Running Store in Bountiful. He was raised in the Ogden area and earned a degree in history from Weber State College. Later he attended Indiana University and received a masters degree in business administration. DeBoer is a marathon runner, having completed 16 of the 26.2 mile events since 1977. DeBoer said, I am seeking this office because I believe the county can be better managed. I have the greatest regard for the personal qualities of the present individual commissioners but I believe we may differ on some important issues. First, a county commissioner must understand and resist the constant pressure for growth in a budget based institution. And, he should realize that whatever government does, it seems to want to do forever. Hence, the commissioners should act in part like a regulatory agency to assure that budgets reflect only current priorities and not simply an operation that is more expensive than that of the previous year. Second, the fact that the current commissioners are all of one political party limits investigation of the alternatives. Third, we need to county government in order to get back to the basics. The departmental budget of an item so basic as county roads is currently less than that of information systems, the county attorneys office, the jail, health nursing.
