These children are very much in demand but with Review Correspondent f i .. f more and more unmarried mothers choosing to keep their babies, there are fewer and fewer of these children available. But that doesn't mean that there arc not children to adopt, according to Mrs. Harris, and FACT members have a special place in their hearts for these children classified as special needs" adoptions. Most of them have adoped special LAYTON Children can come into a family in three ways, said Mardi Harris; by natural birth, by Cesearean section,, or by adoption." The children of Mrs. Harris and her husband Bill have come through adoption. They of currently are the FACT Inc. Service, the Families of Adopted Children Together and they hope through some of their experiences they might be able to help others who choose to add to their own families through the adoption process. Adoption does present some unique situations and problems for families, both in getting children and in the adaptation of each to the family, according to Mrs. Harris. A support system that can offer understanding and counseling from those who have been through a similar experience can often make the difference between success and failure. As with a natural birth, the adoption birth into a family can be painful and full of uncertainty. Often the wait is long and the home studies required by agencies are demanding and time consuming. The wait can be especially long if the prospective parents are waiting for the adoption of a white, healthy child under . r f f f tf f ; iy - 4 out-of-sta- te "' 1 Leaque Sets Meetinq What would be a good diet for a nursAre there any ing mother? foods that make milk? IF a family is interested in adopting such a child, FACT can help to put them in touch with the proper social worker and agency so that the home study can be expedited. But helping to locate the special needs children isnt the only' service offered by this organization. The emotional support offered parents and family s is one of its greatest, assets, according to Colleen Ure, a member of the group. Mrs. Ure has three birth children and two special needs adopted children. One has spinal bifida, was not expected to sit or stand. He was diagnosed as brain damaged and put up for adoption by his natural par- -' ents when they felt that they . couldnt cope with his medical problems. They have another soil who is blind and has a degenerative disease which she has been told might eventually take his life. The older boy, who is now 8 months old, is sitting and pulling himself to a standing position. Through experiences with SPECIAL NEEDS of special children can be met by him, Mrs. Ure was able to help another mother of a child with giving lots of attention, as Mardi Harris demonstrates a similar conditon to realize as she plays with group of such children. , that she needed special medical t' secretary-treasure- y foster homes or maybe has even been considered for adoption but either he or his adoptive family couldnt make the necessary adjustments. Whatever his circumstance, he is a child in need of a permanent home and a loving family. There are thousands of such children available for adoption at any given time. FACT representatives can help find a special needs child or can aid in a regular adoption. Occasionally a member of ' FACT is notified of a child needing adoption. Sometimes , r . children. Perhaps an even more difficult side to adoption is the mental and emotional side. Disruption or the cancellation of a planned adoption during the time the child is in the home before the final adoption takes place can affect as many as 2S to SO percent. Special needs children are the most likely to experience a disruption in the adoption process. With a buddy system, or some sort of support system, that rate drops drastically. If a parent knows that there is someone else they can call who has been through what they are going through it really helps, said Mrs. Harris. Dealing with emotional or behavioral problems can be a very taxing situation..a lot of burn out is experienced. She said that parents can relate to each other, offer emotional support, and even can help by stepping in and giving the parent a two-o- r three-da- y break by taking the child or moving in while the parent-takea respite. With such support, often the problems can be worked out and a healthy fami' ly relationship developed.
