Look carefully What secrets must lie hidden in ye for yourselves because just now his pointed head Luckily for us he is very real his smiling rocky lips are sealed He is not a young man by any — we hope — for at least another means Geologically according to couple of million years Resist pressure to party at office By JUDITH MARTIN Feature United DEAR SOCIETY: MUSICAL SEMPRE Meeting 3:30 pm Thursday at the home of Gene Hilly ard 1466 Maple St Chairman for the day is Evelyn Harris Subject is music of Serialism Members scheduled to perform are Gayle Richards Carolyn MacFarlane and Debbie Jackson Members unable to at3 tend should call Syndicate MANNERS: colleague at my office MISS Re- decently a cided to organize a routine for an office party She made it clear that she expected everyone in our group to participate Group spirit depended on it she cried After three weeks of her badgering I politely but firmly said that there was really nothing I would like to do less Her insistence had turned to mild harassment by then Not put off by my pleas to be left in peace this person — who is normally a friendly sort — proceeded to buy a straw boater and a cane for me to use in the talent show We share an office so ignoring the hat and cane she left on my chair is not easy Should I pay for the gear? She has now become sullen I would not be caught dead singing 'and dancing in a chorus line at an office beer bust GENTLE READER: This sort of nonsense is what comes of the 'popular trend which Miss Manners abhors of mixing business and social life until nobody knows which is which Office birthday parties show-er- s retreats and other such activities transplanted from personal life rob the participants of their time and monvaluable key and of the right to choose their own companions not to mention the right to make fools of themselves without prejudicing their careers Therefore Miss Manners doesn’t believe in office parties at all let alone such Torced participation as you de- scribe If you had wanted to go to summer camp presumably you would have done so By all means resist this If necessary tell the boss that you are quit serious about your work and would he or she please make your excuses to the other employees for not partying on the job This DEAR MISS MANNERS: 'is a second marriage for both of y 'us and we arc inviting immediate 75 people family and close friends Follow-- ‘ ing the ceremony are cocktails at dinner 6:30 pm and a at 7:30 As the entire affair is to be Miss Manners conducted in one room is it proper to invite another 30 people for champagne cake and dancing at 9 pm to join in the celebration? If so should written invitations also be sent to those 30 people and how should they be worded? Also at what point can a receiving line properly greet the new arrivals when the celebration is already in progress? GENTLE READER: Miss Manners urges you not to do this Give another party even a day later for those other people but do not make it so painfully obvious that you have put them on the B list The pattern you are trying to use of having some guests at the ceremony and others only at the reception is intended for weddings where only a handful of people the immediate family will be present at the marriage itself It cannot be stretched to include some friends and not others at two successive parties I am DEAR MISS MANNERS: a vegetarian and have not prepared meat in my home for about four years I feel very comfortable with this practice as does my immediate family My concern arises in entertaining guests or other family members who have been quite vocal in expressing their disapproval of my cooking and eating habits Is it appropriate for me to serve a meatless dinner to those dinner guests I know would prefer meat? If I have house guests for an extended visit may I omit all meats from their diet while they stay with me as is the custom in my home but not theirs? I would like my guests to feel welcome and satisfied but I am reluctant to prepare foods that I choose not to purchase cook or eat GENTLE READER: Hospitality requires that you feed nourishing and palatable meals to such guests as you have around at mealtime but not that you violate your convictions to do so People are supposed to visit one another for the company so there are no absolute staples required However this works both ways SSKinTCAREis'pECIAI FACIAL MO95 Only A Wits Real Treat OGDEN ROY WM76I M CounseLine 298-31- 13 you suffer from depression anxiety or stress or have an emotional drug or alcohol problem CALL US Our CounseLine service is free!
