Show Republican administration has lost respect This will acknowledge recent receipt of a Membership Dues Statement After long consider ation I have decided not to renew although I have been a long term supporter I cannot rationalize why my military pension 1986 cost of living allowance (COLA) was “sequestered the by Act (GRH) Especially since members of congress are apparently about to receive a very large increase in salary Computation of military pensions was changed in 1958 under the Eisenhower administration and replaced by the COLA system Even this was taken by GRH This Republican administration has brought us national disgrace and dishonor by an abortive attempt to ransom hostages President Carter at least made an effort to rescue hostages in Iran though it was Our country must unite in the realization that Iran is an enemy state and we must take military action against it Support of the repressive regime of the shah has earned us the undying enmity of the Khomeini government They have bombed our embassy in Beirut murdered over 200 US marines and taken more hostages This cannot be allowed to go unpunished Massive attacks upon Kharg Island Abadan and Teheran' would bring Iran to heel at once Without oil income they would be bankrupt and defeated Our ally Japan can easily find other sources of oiL If we hold the area at the head of the Persian Gulf Russia should think twice about taking military action But if they intend to have a war let it commence there Perhaps it will take a landslide Democratic victory next election to make a start on the long road to national Our troubles in the Middle East have resulted from two very serious mistakes in foreign policy supporting the shah in Iran and agreeing to the establishment of Israel in Palestine The league of Nations had no right to play God and take land which had been Palestinian for generations and give it to the Israelis There will never be peace in the Middle East until Palestinians have a home of their own George E Deppe Major USAF - Ret Clearfield Officials need to clear up ‘financial fiasco’ Open letter to governor and state legislators: As one of the unfortunate unhappy deceived frustrated and now distrustful depositors of Charter Thrift and Loan I must tell you I am appalled at both the arrogance and incompetence displayed by Utah State officialdom in its miserable attempts to resolve the financial fiasco it created by declaring the state insurance fund and consequently the thrift institutions insolvent I doubt very much that many if any depositors took the risk of losing their savings by depositing more than the insured amount ($15000 per account) Most of us were not willing to gamble losing a dollar just to earn an extra penny Saving and then maximizing the earning capacity of our savings without risk would normally be considered good financial management instead of greedy speculation No doubt most of the depositors were aware that thrift institu-- tions in other states had become insolvent but there was no instance in which the other states refused to reimburse depositors a Even in the state of Utah the de- positors of Murray Thrift which was declared insolvent by the state several years ago got back 100 of their deposits according to the media at the time From what I have read many of the federally insured banks and savings and loan institutions throughout the country are in deplorable financial shape but the federal government has elected not to close them because it doesn’t have adequate funds in the insurance account to pay the depositors Indeed when the federal government has closed banks or savings and loans it has paid 100 even to the depositors whose accounts exceeded the insured amount of $100000 Perled us haps these events depositors to believe that the state of Utah would meet its moral and legal obligations to the depositors too How naive and trusting we were! If the state continues to shirk its moral and legal responsibility to the thrift depositors I together with many other depositors may never be able to trust the state again In fact I would think that all Utahns as well as citizens bond rating companies industrial and entrepreneurs companies from other states would begin to doubt more and more the administrative ability and trustworthiness of the state of Utah and its officials I appreciate that Utah like many others is having financial problems Avoiding a satisfactory and equitable solution to the thrift problem which the state created will add to those prob- lems in the long run I encourage you and your colleagues to investigate this problem in depth determine the real and underlying reasons why it occurred search your souls and minds to develop a responsible solution to the current crisis Certainly it should not be allowed to be repeated Rebecca Evensen South Ogden Increase in government pay not needed We have noted the proposed intent to increase the incomes of the United States representatives senators and other public personnel Most of the individuals in these groups decry the national indebtedness It can not be helpful to this financial situation by adding a high increase to the government operation! Can you convince yourselves of respectability by adding this self indulging amount on to the tax payers? Perhaps the reasoning is that to keep qualified people in government we must retain them with more money These people describe themselves as servants Some sacrifice would demonstrate their sincerity My wife and I are living on a pension Our current increase after medicare additional and deductible rewards us with an minus $3) per approximate month Congress makes the laws for all Just because an issue is legal does not make it just or proper! As you read this please observe your self sternly in a mirror and read it again! Do this while observing struggling people with tense and expressive faces! It is stated that Mr Petersen the new commissioner persuaded the planning commission to let a five foot barbed wire fence serve as a deterrent along an irrigation canal that borders a proposed subdivision to be erected on his property Said fence was to prevent children from getting into the canal Let it be “emphasized that we are not dealing with “hogs" or “hereford bulls but with “children 112386 read American aid turns into profit for Israelis Country after country believes we are their brother’s keeper A voice on my radio while going to work says the mother country to most Americans owes US an equivalent of $25 for every acre under their dominion and France is charging us for every grave of our comrades who defended their country Russia is still sailing some of our ships Country after country believe we are their brother’s keeper It would be interesting to know if any has paid their interest on debts But on the other hand it could drive us to a point of insanity worrying about the many generations behind us strapped to this never ending curse A recent news item now tells us high officials arc entitled to a raise I am glad the Senate saw the light Let’s hope the House docs the same I have been hop 3A Could one ask: how many parents would so fence their yard? Having had much to do with livestock and fencing I’m aware of the hazards of barbed wire (many animals have been mutilated by the same-- 1 had an expe rience with one of my family when he was a teenager and if the wire he encountered had been barbed he would have been decapitated Let us hope our newly elected does not create a hazard just to save a few dollars The child may fare better by falling into the canal than having a mishap and falling victim to the fence Come on parents in the neighborhood you cannot allow this Such a fence would not fit the decor of North Ogden Mr Bailey’s neighborhood and inasmuch as Mr Hunter is always “on the fence" we have more to protect than just the children Elmer S Lanin Ogden "I want to make this room real homey — like the set for the CBS ’Morning Program Were snow plows necessary? On Jan 19 Martin Luther King’s holiday it snowed about one inch in Syracuse I live in Davis County not Syracuse City Early in the morning the snow plow came through and plowed the roads Being a holiday and only one inch of snow why were the plows out? Most of the city’s crews were off Do we have so much money in our snow removal budget that we can pay overtime to crews to remove one inch of snow off the back roads of the county? It has snowed two times this year so I guess we haven’t used up enough money out of our budget Come on Commissioners you were voted in by the confidence of the people to cut taxes not raise them You are supposed to be smart enough to cut these budgets Maybe in our next election people will study issues and vote for the people that have ideas on how to make cuts and do without things we don’t need Gale Voigt Syracuse Why not voice outrage over Kilpatrick column? The 911 system will be of great use Recently I spoke with an AT&T rep and learned that the Enhanced 911 (91 IE) will offer many people who are unable to communicate (hearing or speech impaired small children handicapped or older members of the community) a greater feeling of safety When the dispatcher receives a 911 call information is automatically locked in the computer showing the originating telephone number and address With the Enhanced 911 a county resident has the option of submitting more information to the computer - such as “hearing impaired person" at that address or “bedridden oxygen user By adding such information to the computer the dispatcher has greater knowledge of what equipment may be needed The city of Baltimore is using 91 IE with the great success As for the 50 cents charge — I prefer the layaway plan over a credit plan any time Janet Baker Ogden Remember Pinnochio’s nose? c In a such as ours untruthfulness of national even international consequence starts in a small way with the people and grows unless the people check it I submit our national nose started an unbecoming with the 2 growth back in mischaracterization of the Equal Rights for men and women as Amendment and is can be seen in James J Kilpatrick’s column on January 28 First Mr Kilpatrick said “legislative areas that touch upon ‘sex’" using “sex" as the general parlance shortcut word meaning sexual relations between people as if that is the definition in the ERA He’s wrong “On account of sex" in the 19th Amendment on voting rights and in the ERA and “sex" on drivers’ licenses and birth certificates and in laws and court rulings are not in general parlance They are written in legal language in which “sex” means male or female what every individual is by himself or herself A truthful person who has the skill to read words according to their context will realize the concern of the ERA along with the 14th Amendment for the races is impartial effect of laws upon people regardless of the subject matter Second Mr Kilpatrick calls Congressional power to enforce the ERA “so radical an innovation" when that power is already in the Constitution seven times Amendments 13 14 15 19 23 24 26 and has been there since 1865 usable only when state laws violate any of those seven Constitutional provisions Anyone who is really concerned that truth be reinstated as an ideal of our national morality regardless of position on the ERA ought to express outrage to Mr Kilpatrick His address is White Walnut Hill Woodville i Virginia 22749 Marjorie Childs sequalist Brigham City 50 YEARS AGO February 3 1937 President Roosevelt sent Congress a five billion dollar program of public works as the basis for consideration of a e plan and policy of construction” in planning against future depressions The annual meeting of the stockholders of the Box Elder Creek Water User’s Association was held at the office of the company on West Forest Street in Brigham City Three directors for three year terms were elected as follows: WT Davis Lucius Johnson and Joseph A Christensen The Ogden DeMolay basketball team was scheduled to meet the State Industrial School quint at y pm at the Central Junior High School gymnasium in a game Coach Ralph Peterson said his probable starting lineup of the DeMolay team would be Bill Murray cen- ter Dean Baumunk and Bill Campbell forwards Henry John-- ! son Jr and Joseph Klenke guards Reserve men were Leo Yates Howard Pence Alvin Gor- don Charles Ketchie Jr and Harry Dayhuff The third period Spanish class at Ogden High School elected ‘ new class officers They were Sid- ney Noble president Barbara !
