Geneva producing new structural steel Rolled wide flange structural steel in depth, became available here with the start-u- p of the new facilities following a modification of the standard structural mill, Raymond W. Sundquist, general superintendent said. Wide flange beams are structural sections with parallel flanges. They are especially efficient in the construction of shapes for the growing construction market in the west are now being produced for the first time west of the Rocky Mountains here at U.S. Steels Geneva Works. The location of the Geneva mill enables prompt shipments to major western markets such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle. Ralph W. Seely of San Francisco, vice president sales, western area, stated a price base of 6.90 centslb. has been established for the sale of W'F beams at Geneva, the same price base as that in effect for this product at U.S. Steels Chicago and Pittsburgh, Pa. mills. Consequently, the delivered prices for western customers will be substantially reduced because of savings in freight. Prior to Genevas production of rolled wide flange beams, requirements for this product in the West Coast area were supplied from midwest and eastern mills and from foreign plants. Mr. Seely said the market for wide flange beams is growing in the west. This increase, he said, reflects in part the increase in high-ribuilding construction. He pointed out that' the repeal of a Los Angeles ordinance which limited building heights, plus rising land values, have contributed to the expansion of high rise activity, primarily in commercial building and luxury apartments. Mr. Sundquist said that this has been a and break-i- n highly successful start-u- p period of new mill facilities. He praised the Geneva steelmakers, first, for winning corporation approval and investment for the mill modification project, and second, for a successful start-u- p. It is further proof, Mr. Sundquist said, that Geneva steelmakers are determined to meet domestic and foreign competition in the western steel market. The new facilities in the mill include a 44 universal roughing mill, a 34 edger, a 40 universal finishing mill and a beam straightener. wii um in nift 5MCM mmmm xm dieoff GHsIDqq id flMDfiffia se I I !
