Show T Gadabout- s- American Legion and Auxiliary confab the Dean Simmons daughter, Jeri Lee, and her husband, Gil Lonzorich, who is working on his doctorate in physics at the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis. A number of family gatherings were held while the visitors were in Payson and they were joined by Mr. and Mrs. Bryant (Edith) Decker for several events. The American Legion and Auxiliary attended the annual State Convention in Ogden at the Ramada Inn. This was a very special year for the Auxiliary as they received many awards and cash prizes for their years work. Mrs. Kathleen Merkle, State Director of Saving Bonds presented an award to Pay-so- n for National Security. We received a trophy for best all around Poppy Program, $15.00 for Miss Poppy Publicity Scrapbook, it was then sent on to National to be judged. Miss Poppy, Connie Mad-so- n was invited to go to Ogden as a special guest to present her Poppy Story to both the Auxiliary and Legion. She was a lovely guest and was received in grand style. She was accompanied by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Madson. Mrs. Dale Dixon has returned to her home near Wells, Nev., after visiting in Santaquin and Payson with relatives and friends. She had previously spent a week in Roosevelt with her daughter and husband, Sherrie and Haskell Chapoose, and family. Mrs. Minnie Dawson has returned to her home in Long Beach, Calif, after visiting with relatives and friends in Utah. She was a guest at the home of her son, Glen Dawson and wife and family in Salt Lake City and called on friends, including Mrs. Eppie Cloward in Salt Lake. In Payson she visited Mrs. Nellie Kapple and others. reception to be given July 17 in the Spanish Fork Memorial Building and will leave later for Ft. Lewis, Wash., where he will be stationed during coming months. To celebrate the Fourth of July a picnic was arranged in Payson Canyon with others attending as follows: Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Gill, Payson; Mr. and Mrs. Alfred (Scuby) Johnson and children of Tooele; Colleen and Rebecca Rindlisbacher, Payson; and the Tanner children, Barbara, Mary and James, Payson. Mr. and Mrs. Reid Curtis have been hosts to her sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Bunker and daughter, Carol, of San Mateo, Calif., who spent a vacation at the Curtis residence in Payson. The overnight outing began with supper and a bonfire and group singing of patriotic and other songs. The morning of the Fourth a flag ceremony was held with prayer by Merlynn Tanner and a talk on the flag and respect for our country by Ben Leatham. Others in the group of 29 persons were families of those already mentioned, in addition to the Albert Paynes, the Lester Robbins and the Howard Rileys. n to attend a family reunion Saturday, July 10, were guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Gill and Mr. and Mrs. Colvin Tanner. They included Mr. and Mrs. Bert Cordoza (Edith Gill) and four children of Palo Alto, Calif.; Mrs. Asenath Gill Wendling and daughter, Rae Ann, and also a granddaughter, Carolyn Kholer. Mr. and Mrs. Orvil Merrill, Mr. and Mrs. Rondo Merrill and children, Rod, Tresa, Janice and Christian, all of Pay-soGean and Carolee Merrill Hejna and children, Jason and Schawn, Salt Lake City; Mr. and Mrs. Peery Larson, Spanish Fork, all joined to attend the J.H Pollock reunion held at Mirror Lake on Cedar Mountain last week. Enroute home they stopped to fish on the Panguitch River. Our Americanism Scrapbook was chosen for the Blackburn Trophy. It too was then sent to National for judging. The Payson Unit History was chosen as best throughout the state, A pin and a certificate were presented to the unit The Community Service Scrapbook came in 3rd place with the Chairman giving $2.50 to the Unit. Special membership pins were given by State President Betty Calder to all the Unit Presidents who had their membership in by January 31. We received one of these special pins. In the Junior Auxiliary the history of the Juniors took 1st place and received $5.00 for it. In the Poppy Poster Class I Kathie Llewellyn receved a charm bracelet with the Auxiliary emblem on it for 1st place. In the Foreign Relations doll dressing contest Kathie Llewellyn took 1st place in the Class I division and won $5.00. It (doll) was sent on to National for In the Handicraft in Class II judging. Brenda Heath received $5.00 for 1st place. Kathie Llewellyn also received $5.00 for all around Junior Girl in the state. She entered all the contests that were set up for the Juniors. The most important thing for the Payson Unit was the election of Afton Oborn for 1st Vice President in the state. She has been serving as 2nd Vice President the past year in the state. This was the choice highlight for the Payson Unit. Payson Post 48 and Unit 48 were at the convention with Post Commander Max Llewellyn and his wife Betty, Adjutant Milton Hall and wife Mona, Past District 4 Commander Joe Wilcock and Shirlee, District 2nd Vice Commander LeRoy Heath and wife Blanche, Afton Obron, 2nd Vice President in the state attending. This has been n; Californians who have spent a week in Payson are John Spencer, a sergeant on the police force in Red Bluff, Calif, and his wife, Eleanor, and their children, Scott, Rebecca and Sandra. They were guests at the home of his mother, Mrs. Alice Sjiencer and on Thursday were joined by his brother and sisters and their families for a reunion. In the group were Dr. and Mrs. Phillip Spencer and sons, Steven, Kirk and David, of Tooele, Dr. and Mrs. Melvin (Miriam) Knight and children, Brent, Brad, Leslie Ann and Jeffry of Salt Lake City; Mrs. Don (Barbara) Linquist and three of her children. Born May 21, 1897 at Loa, he was a son of W'illiam Samuel and Mecalena Christiansen Wood. He married Beatrice Bullard Oct. 2, 1919 at Loa. The marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple. Mr. Wood was a retired steelworker, having been employed at Geneva. He was an active member of the LDS Church and had been one of the seven presidents of the Quorum of Seventy. He had fulfilled a stake mission in Nebo Stake. During World War I he served in the cavalry, and was a member of the Harold Brown Post American Legion at Loa. Survivors include his widow, of Payson; five sons, Harold William Wood, San Diego, Calif.; Hershel B. Wood, Whittier, Calif,; Charles M. Wood and Elvin Wood, both of Payson, Murven J. Wood, Henderson, Nev.; four daughters, Mrs. Floyd E, (LaPreal) Beardall, Mrs. DeWayne (Colleen) Brimhall, both of Henderson, Nev.; Mrs. William (Carol) Lanham, St. Louis, Mo. He received his education in the Heber schools and married Afton Carpenter June 6, 1942 in Coalville Utah. For a number of years he was a miner in Park City. In 1950 he moved to Benjamin and in 1959 to Spanish Fork. He lias been employed at Geneva Steel for the past 17 years as a switchman. He was a member of the LDS Church a member of the Benjamin Riding Club and a member of the Eagles Lodge of Provo. Surviving are his wife of Spanish Fork; 2 sons and 2 daughters, Dean L DickW., Mrs. Robert (Marie) Olsen, all of Spanish Fork and Mrs. Larry (Kathy) Jones of Payson; 7 grandchildren and 1 brother, Verl Charles Thompson of Spanish Fork. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. in the Walker Funeral Home of Spanish Fork. Officiating will be Bishop Mont Gustin of the Spanish Fork 7th Ward. YOUTHFUL PERFORMERS Most of the performers are young men and women acting as missionaries of the Mormon Church in New York State. In addition some 200 young women from colleges in the West travel by chartered bus to Palmyra to participate in the Pageant. All the performers pay their travel and living expenses.
