Show xr Doss nillies visit to county Senator Frank E. Moss (D.Utah) spoke to more than 400 persons attending a banquet that climaxed Senator Moss days tour of Utah County. The banquet was held at the Memorial Hall. Accompanying the Senator were Governor and Mrs. Calvin Rampton, the Secretary of State, Clyde Miller and his wife; and Jean Westwood who is the National Democratic Chairwoman from Utah. In addressing the assembly the senator1 I see growth and development stated, everywhere I look in your county; you have to start early and keep going to see any appreciable amount of it. The people concerned with your economic growth are doing a good job. That includes Governor Rampton and right on down to the local businessmen. A great deal of this economic investment and growth is due to the characteristics of the Utah worker himself. I know that when I was fighting to get the I.R.S. Center located in Utah, one of the best arguments I had was the statistical proof that Utah workers produce more, work harder, are sick less, and change jobs less frequently than workers in other parts of the country. So all of our citizens share in the credit for the continued growth of our state. Utah is not only growing, it is changing. If you consider just the past 10 years, it is amazing how the state has changed. An example is the new Interstate Highway System. Provo is now only half an hour away from Salt Lake and Ogden is only a few minutes farther. GROWTH . This shorter travel time means we are coming closer together in the Wasa'.ch Front Counties of the State; and we are growing larger. The national growth rate during the sixties was 11 percent. But in Utah, we grew at a 20 percent rate; nearly double the national average. But nearly all of our' growth was internal, resulting from the fact that we Utahns have families somewhat larger than the national average. It follows naturally that our population is very young. Duing the sixties, the voting age population in the state increased 15.6 percent. Today one voter in five in Utah is between the age of 21 and 27, and therefore did not vote in 1964 when I was reelected. We have been packing people into Salt Lake, Utah, Davis and Weber and Tooele Counties at a tremendous rate in the past 10 years. In fact we have become an urban rather than a rural state. Consider these facts: the average population density for the nation is 57 people ' Thursday, May 7, 1970 Americans and we must help solve Americas problems or we will not be able to solve our own. The senator concluded by saying, The world is changing and Utah is changing with it. Our leadership must come from those who recognize this fact and work toward channeling the forces of change for the betterment of all of us, not from those who spend their energies trying to recapture yesterday." per square mile; for the entire state of Utah the density is only 13 persons per square mile. This means the five counties are as crowded as the state of Pennsylvania. Half of our Utah people live in Salt Lake County. Seventy-fiv- e percent live in the urban setting of the five Wasatch counties. This is a higher urban concentration than the nation as a whole where we have 70 percent of the population living in urban locations. It appears that this trend will continue in the future. During the 1970s the U.S. population is projected to grow 14.4 percent, but Utah will grow another 25.3 percent. The concentration of our population in the urban counties will continue, and I think chances are good that Utahns will continue to have babies at what the nation might consider a high rate. At the same time increased transportation and communications have brought the rest of the world closer to our valleys. Problems on college campuses, the tragedies of our big cities, and even the unrest of foreign countries are of instant RATE BUY Senator Earl AT concern to us here in U'ih. The long distances between us and these events no longer shield us from their impact. All of this points out that the nations problems are also our problem We have We have crime, we have pollution, we have inflation and high taxes, and we all have to work hard to get ahead. We conclude that while in Utah is a sovereign state, Utahns are also When you see an item marked 'Super Saver' It means a special temporary savings, even below eur everyday discount price Also, when we make an exceptional purchase or receive promotion ollow ances from manufacturers, we have an opportunity to pass our savings along to you. WATCH FOR OUR Mothers Day was first observed in Grafton, West Virginia and in the churches of Philadelphia on May 10, 1908, in a response to a suggestion by Miss Anna Jarvis. Mothers Day is dedicated to paying tribute to mothers. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson, following a resolution by congress, during the preceeding year commending Mothers Day observance, issued a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May a Mother's Day and directed that the national flag should be displayed on the public buildings on that day. Mothering Sunday, an old English holiday, antedates the present observance by many years; it was named from the custom of the faithful attending on Mid-LeSunday the mother church in which they had been baptized. They offered gifts at the altar to the church and also to their mothers as tokens of love and gratitud?. Observance of Mothers Day has spread to many countries: England, Sweden, Denmark, India, China and Mexico.
