Show A "ROUND THEf'l l!fEiTOVN,,cJ by B Dvl Cvent Dear Reader: School Starting" Theres in the air: Parents are looking in for bargains on school clothing; teens are just looking; teachers are trying to get their minds under control after three months of vacation; school houses are starting to shine inside and out and it seems that all is well in our sheltered valley. Now as another year gets under way and you, Mom and Dad, are to be relieved of your youngsters for a few hours a day, may I steal a few ideas from someone who was more equipped than I to coin definitions: What Makes A Good Teacher?" The education of a College President The executive ability of a financier The humility of a deacon The adaptability of a chameleon The hope of an optimist The courage of a hero The wisdom of a serpent The gentleness of a dove The patience of a Job the grace of God The persistence of the devil, and A good steady income from some independent source. -- - Gordon Owen I rather appreciated these sentiments of Dan Valentine and I dont think hell mind if I share a few of them with you: A school is a building of four walls., with tommorow inside. A school is a store., with knowledge on its shelves. A school is many things. Its a glow in a teachers heart. Its a question in a young boys eyes.. Its the echo of childrens laughter at recess time., the sound of bells in busy hallways., a choir of young voices raised in husky song.. A school is never empty. All the great men of the past live in its classrooms. A school gives a priceless legacy to the a young... legacy of laughter and of carefree days... A school opens wide vistas so that young eyes can see over high mountains and across long plains. It provides lessons in the past to help answer the questions of the One of the advantages we have of living has been, the in a small town is, or security we have of knowing that our homes, yards and equipment are safe in our absence or while we sleep. Many people do not even own a key to their home; they have never had to lock up a garden hose or worry about a lawn mower disappearing. We have been just a trusting group of souls. It would be nice if it could stay that way but as time goes on we hear more and more of homes in the area being sacked, yard equipment stolen, etc. I suppose we are loosing one of the small town advantages. But this cannot be helped; we cannot go on forever existing in a dog eat dog world and not be affected sooner a feeling of , J J ; ' future.. There is a distinctive aroma about a school .. the aroma of erasers and chalk, wet galoshes, poster paper, paste, crayons, dust and old gym shoes... Its the youngest building in the world... end of quote It's a school.. Thank you Dan... Now in looking back on my experiences as a teacher, Ive made an effort to understand why Ive remained in the classroom as long as I have.. A couple of times Ive gone into other employment, but that constant contact with young people had spoiled me and I returned. These are the Reasons for my returning: The many and varied challenges that confront me.Jrom day to day never leaves any room for boredom.. No day seems too long while Im teaching.. I grow older in years but as long as I associate with the youth I seem to remain young at heart.. My fellow teachers are choice citizens of the community and I enjoy their association... Kids dont seem to have as much time for small talk or gossip as adults., I see the results of my labors from day to day; just as a farmer sees the green stuff grow. I behold intellectual, ') - i ! or later. But these things we can do very little about, except get a key to the locks on the home, build a shed in which to put small equipment and maybe bar the windows. But there is one local activity that we as citizens can do something about and that is this business of trespassing on private property, not to steal anything, but just to be where youre not supposed to be just for the hell of it. Example L We have a man in our town who enjoys making his home and yard beautiful. His lawns are well kept and his flower gardens are organized so that flowers can be seen blooming from early spring to late fall. Each week he floods his grounds with irrigation water. A few weeks ago, he had just completed the irrigating of his spread and the hour was late so he retired to his bed. A neighbor returning .home off the swing shift at Geneva noticed a couple of boys moving around in that newly watered flower garden;, He questioned them and found them wearing hip boots and were looking for fishing worms. In doing so they had raised havoc with a beautiful flower garden. They had had no regard at all for the money, hours or work or loving care that had gone into that garden. They were looking for fishing worms in some ground that had been treated so no worms could exist. Our towns are made beautiful by those people who take pride in their homes and gardens. , They should be supported. Do spiritual and moral growth in the youth, and I feel a stirring of pride in imagining that 'I have made a contribution to may growth. that character in the musical Theres a South Pacific" by the name of Billis. He always had a project going. The company was always in constant turmoil because of his projects. One of his lines was: Projects! Captain, thats what I love is pro- jects." And any teacher who is worth his salt must have projects under way all the time, whether it be with one student at a time or a classroom full. Old Billis seems rather foolish, but a lesson can be learned from the character.. Well good night Dear Reader: I must start thinking about going back to school. My miserable vacation is over and happily I return to the school room.. Now aint that a switch? Gee Iv gotta start brushing up on my grammar... Dear Reader: The English language is composed of many thousand words. Im not sure that anyone knows exactly how many as new words are being added day by day. In one of my noturnal thought sessions, hoping to get myself tired, I became very envolved in deciding which of the strong words in the language carried the most weight with me. I came to the conclusion that my three favorite words were: FAITH, INTEGRITY and EMPATHY. Im sure most of you know the meaning of the first two but Ill bet very few of you out there know the meaning of EMPATHY. I shall begin by giving you the dictionary definition: Empathy, a ter min psychology for the feeling one experiences when hearing or reading of some remarkable event or happening which causes him to imagine the scene and have the same sensations as those acutally envolved in it." (end of quote) In the world of the theatre, empathy is most important because the average person watches a play to lose himself in the lives of the characters. He wishes to be lifted temporarily into another world to become identified with the life on the stage and to experience the emotion portrayed there. I think this would be very much improved if more people had a feeling of empathy for their fellowmen...To understand the feeling of the Black American or any other minority race. There's a song from the show South Pacific that carries this message Youve got to be taught to be afraid of people whose eyes are oddly made; of people who have a different shade. Youve got to be carefully taught. I watched the Miss Black America beauty contest on TV recently and each of the girls when questioned bore a humble testimony that they were proud of their color. Probably in their hearts they envied their white sisters but when one is born black one must make the best of it and the least we can do is to encourage them in their trying to exist. We can try to imagine what our feeling would be if we were to change places with them. We hear a great deal about the Generation Gap. It merely means that most of us old guys and dolls have a hard time we have to have on our property? No Trespassing signs Example 2. A large rock was thrown . through a large living room window recently. The boy who threw the rock was caught and questioned. It seemed that his only reason for throwing the rock was because the window was there and as for . his being chastized by his parents, the window owner just had to forget the whole deal. I can understand a kid throwing rocks through a school house window or other institutions that he feels have been responsible for some of his miseries, but I cant understand the joy in breaking the window of a private dwelling just because its there. . Example 3. Telephone problems are gradually creeping into our area. Its a type of trespassing on our privacy when someone calls and they hang up the receiver when you answer or they just breath heavily into the mouthpiece or if a lady answers, they have a few obsene remarks to make. . Yes, some big town activities are creeping into our smaH towns, but we still have many reasons for our remaining citizens of our suburban communities. AjT ROUND THE pace with a big, loud, live circus band. My wife on one side saying: Look at the doggies in the east ring." My little girls on the other side saying: Daddy, look at the monkeys in the west ring. While I was consentrating on the bears in the center ring. You know a feller can get real confused at a circus. Well, it came to a grand finale with all the glitter and splendor that only a circus troupe can stir up, yet I had to take one more look at those performing elephants in their tent outside. I pushed through the crowd and stood looking at that long line of those big brutes when suddenly it seemed rf l&T0WNe!J ky B Dvi Ivmh Dea'r Reader: Clowns, elephants, horses, pretty girls, daring young men theres So children of all all that and more ages come join us! Take a ride on a bubble! Come to the Circus." I attended the circus last week at the Salt Palace. You know those darn shows still hold a facination for me. Every time I go I feel as though Im a kid again and Im amazed as to why I dont grow up. The only part of a circus I dislike are the high wire acts. I suppose they are a necessary part of every circus, but all tigers, the time those characters are performing high above the circus floor, Im constantly worried that someone may come crashing to the ground.. .So I sigh in relief when all those guys and dolls have both their feet back on solid footing. I thought for a second the other night that my fears had come to pass; this feller stood on a tower about 100 feet high, (give or take a foot.) Blindfolded, he was to jump out and catch a bar about 15 feet away. Well, he jumped and caught the bar but the dern bar broke and down he came. I had a ring-sid- e seat and I thought: Ill see this one splatter right here at my feet." But that crazy guy had a rope tied to each ankle and he came to a sudden stop about six feet from the hard floor. I died a little but they immediately ran in some pretty girls and that helped me to come out of shock. I suppose the magic that a circus holds for me is The Action. Even before starting time one can garner a few laughs from some stupid clown acts, and when the show does get going theres never a dull moment; acts in three rings all keeping 6 PAYSON THE CHRONICIE Thursday, September 11, 1969 a shadow fell across my world. A understanding the youth of today. If we stirred up a little empathy and placed ourselves in the world of the modern youth with its crazy music filthy literature, military service and temptations of all kinds on every hand, maybe we could close that gap a little. You know, I believe that if more of us could develop the attribute of empathy in our systems, we could come nearer practicing the second commandment, to love our neighbor as ourselves. Isorta think this commandment is taking a beating at the present time. Yes, Im convinced that EMPATHY can play an important part in the lives of everyone of us and in my choice of the most valuable words in the language it comes next to FAITH and INTEGRITY. rec- complete photographic' ord. including newspaper pictures, group photos of the families and candid shots of the wedding and reception of enjoyment, and will give the new h weds a lifetime the cost is far less than ou mi chi iinasiine.
