Show 8 THE PAYSON CHRONICLE Payton, Utah - Thurtday, October 3, 1968 84651 Payson High School Is Outstanding Learning House The Payson High School is located at the south end and to the west side of Main street on high ground which had formerly been orchard land. The site extends westward to meet highway Adequate parking is for both cars and bus provided loading and the playing fields are planned to go to the west of the structure. From this hillside location, there is amagni-ficie89-9- 1. nt view, not only of the mountains, but of much of Utah Valiev. especially in the special classrooms such as in the Science, Homemaking, Art Rooms, and Instructional Materials Center. It is custom designed for the specific use intended. Most classrooms are carpeted, except certain heavy wear areas where sheet vinyl flooring has been provided. The floors of the art room are quarry tile. At the windows on the east, south, and west as indicated earlier, there are hand operated louvers. In addition, each classroom has several skylights which are provided with motorized louvers which make it possible to prepare the room for visual aids in just a few seconds. Several classrooms can be jointed together by use of folding sound-propartitions for use in team teaching. The science rooms are provided with special systems of electric wiring, distilled water, gas, and compressed air, along with specialized equipment such as fume hoods and student and instructors tables. They are finished similar to the typical ol BUILDING EXTERIOR The building is constructed of light colored face brick, with some areas patterned. area An of special scalloped face brick is used on the wall adjacent to the front entrance. Windows facing the east, south and west are provided with colored metal louvers. Most of the sun-cont- building has fairly deep roof overhangs and many of these have fascias which drop down from the roof to further increase the sun control and to enhance the appearance of the building. Entrances and windows are aluminum, with all glass which is not covered by louvers being of the tinted variety to reduce glare. All glass in entrances and corridors is tempered as protection against breakage. sun-contr- ol INTERIOR The main entrance forms a link between the auditorium gymnasium wing and the classroom and administrative wing of the building. It also encloses a large central courtyard designed as an extension of such spaces as the auditorium, cafeteria and library. This entrance lobby has floors of brick. It leads by stair and ramp to the classroom wing past a student lounge. The lounge is carpeted, and its walls are designed as an art gallery. Special lighting has been included for this area. Immediately adjacent is the administrative suite where there are numerous administrative offices, meeting rooms, teachers preparation room, vault, and faculty lounge with rest rooms. ACADEMIC AND SHOP AREAS The Academic andShop areas consist of approximately 33 instructional areas as follows: 2 Foods, Clothing, and Home Living Classrooms with Storage Room; 1 Art Classroom with Work Room and Dark Room, Oil painting Area; 1 Typewriting Classroom; 1 Shorthand Classroom; 1 Classroom; with Room; 1 cial pairs of Classrooms with and Conference Rooms with provisions for combining for larger classes; 6 General Classrooms with Conference Rooms; 1 Conference and Meeting Room or Student Council 1 Yearbook Room; 1 Drafting Classroom with Conference Room; 3 Shop Classrooms; 1 Vocational Agriculture Shop with related offices, Storage and Work Rooms; 1 Woodworking Shop complete with Office, Project Storage Rooms, Supply Room and Finishing Room. Side walls of the auditorium are designed for refinement of the acoustical environment with special curved face scalloped faced brick. This pattern is accentuated by the lighting placed in the ceiling adjacent to the walls. Floors here are concrete with hardener applied. The shops are all acoustically treated and are equipped with special equipment such as sawdust collection system, painting exhaust equipment, welding hood areas, and with special provisions for storing materials such as lumber and pipe. It now provides visual aid and sound equipment control, committee rooms, etc., in addition to the 10,000 book library with its individual study carrels and a variety of other study areas.
