Show Salina SunGunnison Valley News Wednesday page NwPmhnr 3 Off the top Be my Neighbor Change begins in 1998 Semester Conversion is coming for colleges and universities in our area The University Center at Richfield will hold a semester conversion seminar November 7 at 5:30 pm at 200 South 800 West Just follow the signs Snow College along with other public state colleges and universities will change from a quarter calendar to semester calendar beginning with the academic year This decision made by the State Board of Regents over a year age will put Utah's colleges and universities in line with the majority of colleges and universities nationwide already using a semester calendar For University Center students not completing a degree by the end of this summer this change could be very important Students will feel the greatest impact working toward their Associates degrees and general education Graduation requirerequirements ments are going to change courses will change and school starting and ending dates will change “Be paranoid!” cautions the Advisement Office While colleges and to semesters topic of seminar universities are doing everything possible to make the ti ansition a smooth process much of the responsibility lies with the student Students who plan carefully can make the transition to semesters painlessly All students in the area should plan on attending this important meeting This will be the most concise gathering of knowledgeable staff available in the area to answer questions Two words “transfer" and “ease” relate to importance of your attendance The difference between a quarter and a semester calendar is the number and length of class sessions offered during the year Currently there are class sessions or quarfour ters available through the University Center When the conversion to mesters is complete there w ill sessions or semesters w ith one additional session during the summer Semesters w ill require about the same amount of class time during the year— it’s just packaged differently Students will take the same number of credit hours (12) to be considered Decrees will still be attain able in the same amount of time Tuition will remain the same For example tuition and fees for one year at Snow College are currently $1218 This per year or $609 per semester does not preclude normal yearly ition increases General lducation Completing groups makes for a safe transition Students who complete a series of required classes on the quarter calendar will be allowed to count that group as completed after the semester conversion even if the requiiements for that group ehanee example Math w ill be required for all students seek-- t ing a degree This year the math quirement can be filled by completing MATH 101 Next year a student may take MATH 1030 1040 or 1050 to complelethe requirement MA H 101 will no longer fill the math requirement but will count as elective credit only Don't panic!
