Show l0l Page 2 Gunnison Valley News November 5 1 997 Letter to the Editor Veterans Day program announced for Nov 1 1 Tuesday November 11 1997 at in the Gunnison 10:10 am High School a Veterans Day Program and drawing will be presented The public is invited The speaker will be: Archie Maynard Brugger was bom in Venice Utah to George and Myrl Brugger on November 14 1926 He was called Maynard until medical school when to avoid further confusion he became Archie He graduated from Richfield High School in 1945 and gave one of the honors orations After serving in the Army of Occupation in Europe he giaduated front Utah State Agricultural College in 195 and from medical school at the University of Utah in 1955 He and Carolyn Nielson from phraim Utah met at the Salina Ext periment Station located in ry in the summer of 1948 and were married on September 3 948 in the Manti Temple They had been 7 years when he graduated from medical school le served his internship at Brooke rtny Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston (San Antonio) Texas and temained there for his residency in General surgery Following a three-ear tour in Europe he served a resisurdency in gery heart chest and lung) at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington DC Later as a Colonel the army sent him to Baylor University where he worked on his masters degree in hospital administration He is certified by the “American Board of Surgery” and the “Board of Thoracic Surgery” He is a Fellow in the America College of Surgery He has been active in the American Medical Association The American Academy of Emergency Physicians and the American Hospital Association After retiring from the U S Army he became a professor of surgery at “The University of Texas at San Antonio" He retired from the university in 1991 after 16 years on the faculty because of blindness (He has subsequently had a marvelous restoration of his vision) He was chief of the department of surgery at the San Antonio State Chest Hospital while at the University of Texas He has served in the church around the world All three members of the LDS Church first presidency have had their hands on h is head or have been in his home as well as Pres Benson He toured Korea with both Pres Benson where Pres and Pres Hinckley Hinckley sethim apart asamemberof the Korean Mission Presidency He worked for Pres Benson while he presided over the European missions as Executive Secretary for Servicemen Pres Monson ordained him a High Priest Pres Faust released him as Stake President in San Antonio Texas He was Stake President of the San Antonio East Stake for 10 years He has been executive secretary for servicemen in Europe for two general authorities (Ezra Taft Benson and Theodore M Burton) He has been Homemaking for Nov 12 set night Tri-Wa- rd Join with all of the sisters of the Gunnison Wards for the annual fall homemaking night on Wednesday November 12 from p in Participants may select 4 of 9 mini-lasses being offered There will be a Rhodes breadmaking demo a Heritage Appreciation class several craft choices decorative herb bottles and scrapbook instruction The Family History Center will be open with structions on how to use this facility for family research A tasty fall supper will be served from pm A nursery will be provided Contact any member of a Gunnison Relief Society presidency for further information on this event Hawaii trip wasn't wasteful Dear Editor have waited for someone to spond to Blake Edwards ofcGunnison who is upset because Sanpete Commissioners attended meetings in waii and one or more took their wives He believes this is a waste of tax dollars Many professional people attend training meetings Police officers must be certified by the Police Academy Doctors and dentists attend conventions to keep up on the newest medical techniques research etc All elected officials have training meetings where they learn theirduties and responsibilities within the guidelines of the law For example if you were elected to a city or county position would you know what you were expected to do? Could you possibly know of the constant changes in the law?
