Show Pago 0 September 111 996 Gunnison Valley News Dogs dominate Manti in big win by Jim Olsen It wasn’t pretty but the Gunnison Bulldogs will take the 20 7 win over the rival Manti Templars Despite 210 yards total offense and a toilet papering of penalties Coach Rhett Jackson’s home the Bulldogs tenaciously defended themselves to a win “The defense was the key to the game" said Jackson “There were a couple of key series that could have turned the game around for Manti ” One of those series occurred just seconds before the end of the first half Gunnison up by 6 was struggling with Manti on the nine yard line Manti tried three unsuccessful passes and then was stopped on a run up the middle That ended the half with Gunnison breathing a sigh of relief “If they would have scored it could have been a whole different ball game" said Jackson The Bulldogs struck early with a 70 yard pass from quarterback Travis to Brady Blackham Avery Blackham was not the primary receiver but Avery picked him out and threw him a perfect pass “It was probably the longest pass reception in Gunnison’s history” said Jackson A two point conversion attempt failed The second half opened up with a 5 yard penalty on the Bulldogs for not getting on the field on time A ‘pooch kick’ by Manti was returned for good yardage by Brennen Madsen A 43 yard scamper off the right side by Rustin Pickett set up Gunnison’s second touchdown With the ball inside the five yard line Gunnison was called for holding Avery then took a bootleg in for 16 yards for the score Blood kicked the extra point increasing the score to 13 0 Gunnison again defended well against Manti Another wall was set up as Manti was within Gunnison’s Coach Jackson encourages the defense during a time out 5 yard line with four attempts to fumbles Gary Anderson and Jaren score Gunnison held for three tough Jensen each had an interception “Our defense was excellent plays and then KC Bush came up with a fumble turning the ball back They weren’t going to yield” said Jackson Other defensive highlights over to Gunnison Gunnison's final score came off included Dean Sanderson who a 25 yard pass from Avery to Jaren handled Manti’s biggest players and Jensen who was tackled on the one Avery and Blackham who blocked yard line Avery pushed in the score some key passes on a keeper Blood kicked the extra Looking to Friday’s game against Juab Jackson said that if the point leaving the score 20 - 0 Manti’s only score came with 3 offense can move the ball Gunnison has a good chance of beating the seconds left to play Cody Hatch caught a pass The Bulldogs had put Wasps “I feel real good about our in their SophomoreJunior squad for chances against Juab If the boys will come and play well it should be a some experience The PAT was sucgood game" he said Jackson admitcessful “We still have a lot of work to ted that Juab might be a little bigger do” said Jackson “We are holding than Gunnison but said Gunnison’s too often making errors that cost us quickness of defense would work in momentum We were assessed more the Bulldog’s favor penalty yards than Manti and that Ashley Wegener bothers me" he added Avery only threw the ball 5 times for 95 yards two completions one touchdown and one interception The Gunnison Valley High Shawnie Holyoak won in two sets Rustin Pickett ran nine times for 53 School Girls’ Tennis Team won
