Show Page 2 Gunnison Valley News 111 996 September Gunnison Head Start finally able to open doors A lot of hard work and federal money will finally be utilized when the Gunnison Migrant Head Start Program (MHSP) gets underway this week MHSP is geared to help low come and handicapped children who are four and five years old The facility is not just for Hispanic children Parents are encouraged to visit the center and see if their child can qualify The center has been funded for 40 children DeAnn Draper the Gunnison MHSP Director hopes to have 20 children to start this week ‘‘We will operate a 32 week program (9 months) But a child may enter the program at anytime We have lots of room” said Draper According to Draper the prog! am was funded last year Plans were to remodel the building at 151 South Main Street in Gunnison and open at the end of 995 lowever the remodeling on the building became more extensive than originally planned The budget for the remodel but grew to exwas set at $75000 ceed $200000 to meet strict county building codes The beautiful facility now has a DeAnn Draper MHSP Gunnison Center Director points out the many amenities in the kitchen at the new Head Start Center offices huge kitchen classrooms and a parent resource playroom roon1' Principal has agreed to let the children share the school playground until the new one at the site is com- “Everything is complete except for the playground he plans are still being review by the architect” said Anderson Draper Rodney Gunnison Valley Elementary School pleted The facility will have 15 employees The staff will include two teachers two teacher assistants an education specialist to help the teachers two family service employees two bus drivers a cook a custodian and an office manager Most employees are required to be bilingual They are trained to work closely with the school district and share services and resources with the school The program has two new buses to help pick up and drop off the children The Gunnison operation was made possible by a federal grant from the Administration for Children and FamiliesHead Start Bureau’s In Migrant Programs Branch Sanpete County MHSP also operates a 12 day center in Mt Pleasant MHSP works with Centro de la Familia de Utah a private nonprofit organization that has been serving the minority and Hispanic community in Utah since 1975 Centro de la Familia currently operates eight different projects throughout the state and services over 4000 individuals This Head Start program will operate in part from grants from MHSP and other federal funds Because of the slow start the center has been able to take advantage of two years of funding for needed supplies Head Start works with an individual’s social and emotional development It encourages a family learning experience and helps reach the needs of parents to ensure they are good primary care givers Monthly parent meetings are held which gives parents the opportunity to be involved in the child’s development Parents may serve on a Parent Center Committee The Head Start Center can be accessed off 200 South from the road behind Midstate Jeeparts This has been done as a safety precaution for both the children and parents For more information call weekdays between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm Gunnison Valley Arts Council plans Opening Social Monday The Head Start classrooms are organized into centers for separate activities and are full of learning tools for the children They also have a drinking fountain sink and bathroom facilities at and olds height Paul Says The Gunnison Valley Arts Council will meet for their Opening Social on Monday September 16 at 7:30 pm at the Gunnison City Hall The Gunnison Valley Arts Council is an organization formed to promote art artists and the quality of life in our communities GVAC was formed in 1987 and since that time has sponsored many events such as concerts holiday balls artists in residence at schools visual art displays children’s plays centennial balls fashion shows The Central Utah Nutcracker and with matching funds from the school district installed a new sound system in the Gunnison Valley High School Auditorium in 990 with a total cost of $55000 If you are interested in having some fun while being a part of this worthwhile organization please come to the city hall at 7:30 pm this Monday There will be a short program of fine entertainment and refreshments Your ticket to a secure retirement 5 Some political problems are so complex that you have to be awfully smartjustto remain undecided For a recorded message of current rate information call BOND f' J- 'I -
