dignitaries included Elder Ben B Banks LDS Church Pastor Jay Swanson South Sanpete Baptist Church Father Michael R Sciumbato St Elizabeth Catholic Church Lane McCotter James Gillespie and Terry Bartlett Utah Department of Corrections (UDC) Dave Rees Architect Rees - Campbell and was conducted by CUCF Warden Fred Van Der Veur Mathews related some of the history of religious efforts at CUCF “In the beginning was a bit apprehensive as went into either Birch or Ash and endured the cat calls “We are here five years later due to the great faith of you dear brethren (inmates)” he said Mathews stated the inmates and volunteers held a “fast” for the construction Pres Irvin Mathews shared historical insights with the audience his service to the men at CUCF and concluded that his desire was for the inmates to be able to enjoy peace and tran- bid opening There was some concern the construction cost would exceed the amount of money donated The facility cost approximately $800000 all donated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Mathews shared personal reflections of Gunnison pool placed on CIB pending list Gunnison City was told by the Utah Community Impact Board that they may get as ninth as 75 percent funding for a new pool According to City Manager Ray Limb the city was told that they were put on the pending list' le said that this means that the city needs since the beginning God has instructed his children to build a place where “both the commonly and saintly can come for help and strength to turn their lives around” He said that a portable alter would be dedicated in the near future Elder Ben B Banks a member of the LDS Church’s First Quorum of Seventy said that the Lord was pleased with what had transpired to build the chapel at CUCF He related the parables of the lost sheep the lost coin and the prodigal son le cited that each was lost for one reason or another but that a benevolent God loved each one Elder Banks also said the chapel was a place where the inmates could find themselves and make the changes in their life that could bring about forgiveness and inner peace In his dedicatory prayer Elder Banks blessed not only the facility but the volunteers who put in countless hours of their time to help the inmates The 50 participants were treated to three musical numbers by the Inmate Choir under the direction of Lola Williams accompanied by Sandra lolyoak Refreshments were served following the service A tour was given of the new facility which includes offices classrooms and a room to be used for family history research Four Valley farms honored as 'Century Farms' by state Four Gunnison Valley farms were recently honored as Utah Century Farms They were honored at the Sanpete County Fair by State Senator Leonard Blackham Additional recognition will occur at the Utah State Fair this coming week Following is a brief history of the farms compiled by the families that currently own the farms Mr and Mrs Boyden Christensen Christensen Farm Christenburg Bown Dairy Fayette he Bown Dairy Farm has been in continuous ownership of the Bown family since its purchase in 1888 by William Bown Sr It was purchased from James Mellor one of Fayette’s original settlers It has undergone 108 years of growth being farmed improved and Over the years it has developed produced alfalfa com sugar beets and grains It has also supported ! various livestock enterprises including range cattle turkeys and pigs The first residence established on the farm was in 1927 when Elton Bown Cecil’s father built a home there and expanded the farming operation sons Brent and Ken during the summer months Their operation now includes a dairy and farming to raise alfalfa corn and grains The farm currently occupied by deaths their efforts were the promotion ofCentral Utah said Christensen Boyden Christensen was homsteaded Herman Christensen's father Ray H by his Julius Christensen Christensen's Christensen took over the farm in grandfather Titus Christensen and War II he purchased the farm from his brothers Theodore E and Julius his father Herman homesteaded the area beBoyden married Buelah Sternberg tween Gunnison and Mayfield in the in 1947They have raised four daughters and a son on the farm They are fall of 1854 named the They valley Kayleen (Weston) Jeffrey Denver CO Ray B (Laurel) Christensen Christenburg grandfathers Hamilton Garrick and Jens Hanson were among the early settlers ot Gunnison Both were veterans of the Blackhawk War and after the settling of hostilities they were among the first families to move out to Centerfield Each were granted 60 acre homestead patents from President Chester A Aurther in October 1883 These tracts of land were side by side They are now divided by Sugar Factory Lane The two families worked to- - gether to help build homes irrigation systems schools a church roads a railroad and a sugar factory In 1914 Mardell's father Willard Jensen a grandson ol Jens Hanson married Ellen Elizabeth Tyzack a granddaughter to Hamilton Garrick This joined the properties and created the farm that the Jensen now occupy Mardell is the fourth generation and his son Keith Jensen represents the fifth generation and his children Zachary and Shara are the sixth generation to live on the farm |
