Show Serving Utah's Great Pahvant Valley Single Copy "5 cents USPS 89 No Vol March 38 2000 30 I Nielson receives award for work with inmates Betty Jo Speakman Robert “Ag" Nielson was presented an honorary plaque by Pete Hawn director of the Department of Corrections at an awards banquet on March 17 A retired school teacher"Ag" has been teaching classes for the inmates of the County Jail in Fillmore since 1991 Because of his efforts over sixty inmates received G D's and a dozen received diplomas with six more ready This unsung hero is changing lives for many inmates Captain Robert Decker of the Sheriff s Department described Nielson as a “unique man" whose longlife unselfish public service shouldn't go unnoticed A true volunteer he has taught over nine years through all seasons whether payment on or not - it didn't matter Decker said there isn't an inmate back there that doesn't like “Ag” and trust him They by Captain Robert Dekker congratulates Robert work with inmates that he is sincere and really cares about them there education and self provement If you should ask him what a particular inmate was in for he couldn't tell you He doesn't ci re told him their story but he doesn't He is interested in where they are ask and what he can do for them scholastically ducation levels from first grade through high school are available to these inmates who hive "lallen thro igh the ven those cracks' tor wha ever reason who do not rvc’ive til D s or diplomas walk out w nh positive experiences due to hey learnthey don't have “Ag's"eIlorts to be losers they can accomplish something If they come in unable to read or write a whole new world is open up to them Some of the inmates are used as know Nielson for his dedicated Groundbreakers (I tor) are President Frank Stevens Major Terry Cates Major Sam Hudspath and Chiel Yoeman Michael Walker tutor's They are supportive eager to help and do a tremendous job Joy when an inmate passes a test results in war hoops resounding through the halls Nielson said during the previous 72 hours he had 45 students in his classes compared to two or three when he began teaching Not all inmates participated in the classes and some get “sick lame or lazy" in the process But they all have the choice Captain Decker said for many years “Ag" was the entire education program le gratefully acknow ledged the other volunteers now scrv ing and said they could use more There is a training program for teachers who want a rewarding experience Such indiv iduals are trged to volunteer for this serv ice Jo Speakman Weather combined with Veteran's committee W ay ne Jackson Rama Day and others too numerous to mention to produce near perfect festivities Preparations began early at North Courthouse parking lot in Fillim re Saturday for groundbreaking ceremonies for Memorial Long reviewing stands were backed by 14 flags with four being Old Glory in various stages plus flags of each military branch of service Uniforms of all branches were wom with honor by veterans of ages as they participated in the parade pro gram and comradene Festivities followed last week’s published agenda beginning with military rade at 2 45 a reminder of the great gift America’s sacrificed sons gave assurance that these trucks weapons and men in military uniforms are on our streets only for peaceful activ mes and celebrations An unexpected treat as an introduction to the program “All Gave Some -
