command consultant of the oral and maxillofacial section at Camp Pendleton Dental Center Riding was a second lieutenant when he armed in letnam in June 1969 “W hen first met my commanding officer a colonel for Marine Regiment he gave me m assignment was to be a forward obsener for 7 Marine Regiment” Riding recounted “He told me that was replacing a Ll Johnson so asked where Johnson was The colonel sponded flatlv that he went home asked asked how how that he went home Johnson was He responded without ‘he's dead looking up from his paperwork ' dead we're guess “A little while later picked up a magazine outside the colonel's office while waiting for my paperwork started flipping through the pages of a list in the magazine The list was of American members who recently died in the war" He recognized one of the names "I had a friend in Basic School who was sent to Vietnam several months earlier W e had been keeping in touch since he was deployed but he stopped writing about a month or two earlier W hen saw his name printed in those small black hadn't heard from knew why ters him" Riding’s first combat mission wasn't eas After another young lieutenant was withdrawn by Medevac because of malaria Riding was reassigned as a platoon commander and forward observer just two weeks after arriving "We were given a set of coordinates and off we went with 7 Marines flying into a place called Arizona territory” he said “We were dropping in about a mile north of the area when we started to ceive fire The bird took a round from an It cut right through the calf of the guy next to in the Army so came home and enlisted with the Matook rines I w anted to be an officer but what was available then “I wasn’t the biggest strongest or smartest going into boot camp" he continued “I had some advantages though had completed a Momton mission which is very demanding both physically and mentally and was older than the typical recruit Most guys were 17 was 21 “In the first week of boot camp set my goal to become a squad leader One of our drill instructors was named GySgt Hacker He was meaner than snot and scared the heck out us " The second week of boot camp was a defining moment in Riding's military caNavy out reer drill “W e were practicing GySgt Hacker called ‘dress right dress’ had worked my way up to road guard was supso was second in the squad didn't pose to turn my head to my left forgot He started screaming and yelling but didn't say who messed up So when he called the same order again forgot Hewasscreamingwhenlsawhim again somecoming my wav thought 'uh oh one is going to get it As he got closer knew it had to be someone near me Never did think it was me “He walked right up and punched me in the stomach It hurt my pride more than any thing He said to me ‘You’re older than the rest ol these guy s If hav e to lay break your neck ' a hand on you again "It was a huge motivating factor was promoted from road guard to guide soon after never got to be squad leader
