Show Millard County Chronicle Progress March 9 2000 Page 5 Community Events Local dialogue on poverty announced Six County Association of Governments will sponsor a 2000 Dialogue on Poverty on March atlO30am at the Richfield Senior Center 890 North 300 West Richfield L’tah The local forum is part of Dialogue on Poverty 2000 Leading America to Community Action sponsored by the National Association of Community Action Agencies (NACAA) to actively involve Americans in the onabout poverty in going discussion America e Often the voices of low- - and people simply are ignored in the decision making processes that directly and significantly affect their lives Six County Association of Governments is sponsoring this community forum so that everyone can join in conversation about the realities of living in poverty and how individuals families and communities can become The purpose of the forem is to determine strategies and actions needed to help alleviate poverty in the six county area and to educate public officials the private sector and the general public about current problems The Six County Association of Governments will use the information gathered at this diato plan logue programs to better scrv e individuals and families In addition a statewide Dialogue is being planned ftDelta Helen McMillan Kathy Walker Visitors can experience a fresh and imaginative approach to vsatercolors during March at the Great Basin Museum in local Delia The display by artist Helen McMillan includes 16 original watcrcolors including her latest CacThe Bloom Fushia and tus in She is predominately a transparent water colonst interpreting her lose for flow ers and the landscape w ith each The freedom to play with form texture and light by using various papers and natural hues marks her work Whether the painting reveals her loving scrutiny of a single (lower or the varied textures found m an abundant display of wildflowers her work w ill enthrall viewers ' “My work reflects what I see and how feel Mostly it tends toward realism and other times is quite abstract” said McMillan “I have a connection with the subjects paint and am attached to them In one way or another the subjects I choose are a part of my life” McMillan was bom in Spokane Washington and raised in Butte Montana She has been painting since 1981 Her art education began at Cotty College in Missouri and continued at colleges and universities in Montana She has completed many watercolor workshops with artists such as Al Brouilet Ching Khee Chee Jean Haverson Charles Reid and Jessica Zemsky In 1999 she completed a Syarojjjenrie864-40T- By Master’s program through North Light Art School in Cincinnati The petite and artist usually paints four days a week and at least four hours each day To grow she insists artists must be disciplined "It is a scientific fact artists are usually most creative at 1030 am and I agree Most of my best work is done during the hen taken seriously painting morning is very intense Nevertheless it brings a joy and satisfaction that cannot be erased along the w ay" she said McMillan is extremely productive and of the hundreds of paintings completed she has framed about 450 Pieces that have personal meaning are added to her family’s private collection Others she sells Her work has received many honors and is found in area and national shows “We are excited to have Helen’s paintings at the Museum” said Cindy McMichael employee “We invite residents and visitors to visit the exhibit and while here to view our other displays showing the area’s history and pioneer life in West Millard The Museum isopen Monday through Saturday from 10 am until 4 pm" Art lovers will have the opportunity to meet McMillan at the Great Basin Museum Sat March 11 from 12 pm until 2 pm She will answer questions about her work and greet visitors History and Culture of Pahvant Valley Indians Before the Spanish Fathers before the trappers and traders and before the Mormon Pioneers a number of Indian Tribes inhabited the mountains and valleys of Central and Southern Utah One of the earliest of these tribes was the Anasazi who came and then disappeared between 100 AD and 1300 AD Then came the Fremont Indians and after the Fremont came the Utes from which our state gets its name There were many of the IHe Indians and one of these was the Paiute or Water Ute Tribe On 6 at the Delta North Thursday March Llcmentary School starting at 7 pm the Great Basin Museum and Historical Soci- -
