Show Page 8 Millard Countv Chronicle Progress April 23 1992 7 Senior News Computer Info What kind of computer should First of all let me explain that I am not one of those fellows that walk around with a potket protestor and tape on the bridge of my glasses I'm just an well sort of ordinary well ordinary maybe a little strange oh all right I'tn strange but don't have aposket protector I’m just a "I like using my computer" kind of guy in a I work for a large corporation computer department I have the responsibility to tram our employees how- to use the computers It wasn't until a year ago though that I purchased a home computer for our family to use and for the most part the computer merely has replaced the Nintendo although am it to prepare tins article Answering the question as to what kind of computer to buy is very difficult It is much like asking a friend what kind of car should you buy all depends on your likes and dislikes and for what purpose you irtend to use your computer for One of the first tilings you should understand about computers is the CPU or Central Ihocessing Unit as that is the way IBM compatible computers are often referred to The CPU is a small chip on the mother microprocessor board about one inch square This is the brains of the computer Nearly all the data will be jiroccssed by the CPU and directed to any peripheral device to complete the task it was signed The most obvious difference in CPU's is the difference between IBM and IBM compatible's which use Intel chips and the Apple computers that use Motorola chips Although Apple and Intel are coming closer to being compatible with each other there is enough difference that many of the pmgrams w for one will not work on the other Apple's market tends to be in graphics sound and popular with school districts IBM and IBM compatible’s are more popular in the business applications They arc also becoming very popular within school districts and shares the majority of the market in personal computers In our area the majority of people buying computers seem to be IBM or IBM compatible IBM started selling the personal computer around 1981 and appropriately called it the "PC" The microprocessor chipwas thclntcl 8086 IBM folwith the "XT’ personal lowed the computer which was built using Intel’s IBM compat8088 microprocessor ible’s came out on the market around this time period Although the computer itself was not made by IBM it acted the same had nearly all the same features as an IBM could run all the programs that I J buy? were written for the IBM and generally cost less than a computer built ty IBM Thus the term IBM compatible was coined A compatible computer uses the same microprocessor architecture but not necessarily built by Intel Early in 1982 Intel created the 802086 chip and IBM manufactured the "AT’ which stands for Advance Technology T1 e AT with its new microprocessor could process data faster than the XT's could In future articles I will attempt to explain how data can be processed faster When referring to CPU's like the 80286 or 80386 people began dropping the 80 referring to it as a 286 or 386 The AT then is commonly referred to as a 286 The AT lasted probably the longest of personal computers before another generation was created In 1985 Intel introduced the 80386 chip and a newer and faster generation of computers w ere being marketed A few years later the 80386SX was introduced The SX was for the most part a 80386 but had a 16 bit bus instead of the 32 bit bus With the smaller bus the motherboard cost less to manufacture and 386SX 's sold for less than a true 386 but runs slower The most recent technology in Intel releases was in 1989 with the release of and the the 8(8486 microprocessor 486SX Now’ all the computer geeks are anxiously awaiting the release of the 586 so they can go faster than a speeding bullet and have more pow er than a locomotive have limited experience with the Motorola family although the first com puter ever dealt w ith w as an Apple The Motorola chips started with the 68000 very near the same time the PC as introduced Applg tended to keep its technology closed or proprietary eliminating the chance for a manufacture to clone it Motorola's family of microprocessor chips extends from the original 68(XK1 Next was the 68020 68030 and currently the 68040 This is merely a touch upon the surface of determining what kind of computer to buy but at least now you can speak sensibly to a salesman w hen referring to the generation of IBM computers In summary the evolution of IBM and IBM compatible's arc: OTICEOftKIGHTVEQ is accepting The Farmers Home Administration (FmHA) nominations for County Committee elections for MillardJuab County This notice is issued to inform
