Show Page 8 Millard County Chronicle Progress April 5 1990 Rabbits beat Rams but the cost is high by Loretta Ternary DHS The Delta High boys’ baseball team travelled to South Sevier on TuesIt day March 27 beating the Rams was an expensive victory however as pitcher Brooks Jackson breaking his right leg in two places The weekend before South Sevier had beaten Cedar High School and Ogden High School in a tournament "They’re obviously a pretty good team" said Coach Ron Petersen Brooks pitched s shut out for the first five innings but then his arm starting bothering him so Coach Petersen put him at the shortstop position The bottom of the seventh inning the The Rams had two outs score was and two people on base The next baQ w as hit between George Finlinson and Brooks at shortstop They both ran for the ball neither one seeing the other When they collided they flipped over and George landed an his head Brooks broke two bones in his right leg but he also had the ball in his glove "He ended his high school career a hero" said Coach Petersen Brocks is in the Payson hospital and his leg still hasn’t been set due to swelling 1 for the Lady Rabbit softball team 13-1- Lady Eagle hoopsters named All-Sta- te Noe Yamaguchi and Debbie Child Girl's were recently selected to the Team by both the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News Noe a senior guard was a First team selection in both publications She aver- aged 10 points and 2 assists a game Noe the studentbody vice president at Mil- lard and is involved in many activities She is the Social Science Sterling editor of the school newspaper and is a member of the National Honor Society She currently maintains a 38 GPA Debbie was a first team selection by the Salt Lake Tribune and second team selection by the Deseret News The junior forward averaged 14 points and 6 bounds a game She too has been volved in student government and other activities including National Honor ety with a 385 GPA Swim Pool news West Millard Community Swimming Pool announces admission an pass prices for the racquetball courts which will be opening shortly The racquetball courts will be opened weekdays from 5:30 a m to 5 pm and 6 to 10 pm and on Saturdays from 12 noon to 5 p m and 6 to 10 pm Reservations will be accepted Racquetball courts will cost $ 30 per person per hour There will be an age limit of 10 years or older for use racquetball courts which are scheduled to open for use in May T uesday is "half price night" so a 75 cent admission price will be implemented Wednesdays are "Bring a Friend” night For every regular paid admission a fnend can get in for free! Along with the racquetball courts West Millard Community Swimming Pool has installed hardware to set up nets in the courts to play the newest court game "Wally ball" Wally ball will be $5 00 an hour per court This includes the use of the special wallyball court and net Wallyball can be played by up to 8 people Swim passes for the pool only will remain the same price Passes for the entire facility will be as follows: Family year $13000 12 year $7000 month $4000 Single year $7500 12 year $5000 month $3000 Senior citizens are allowed a 50 percent discount on all regular pnees The 50 mile club has two members who have recently passed the 300 mile mark of swimming of “water walking" Dave Larsen and Madge Brown reached this goal on March 23 The pool is proud of Madge and Dave for their determination in reaching 300 miles On Saturday April 14 the pool will be closed for a private party from 6 to 8 pm Afterwards the public will be admitted from 8 to 10 p m Please make a note of this date and time to eliminate confusion and Easter Vacation hours disappointment for open swimming at the pool will be Thursday 12 noon to 5 p m and 6 to 9 pmm and Friday 2 noon to 5 pm and to 10 pm Dive for Money and Prizes The annual Easter Vacation Dive for Money and Prizes will be Thursday April 12 at 2 pm All youth ages are invited to the pool to try their luck at picking up colored washers and coins from the bottom of the pool The washers are turned in at the office for prizes and the money is to keep! Bryant Larsen bowled a 152 game on Senior Citizens He is 96 years young Nice going Bryant "There is no expedient to which a man will not resort to avoid the real labor of thinking” — Sir Joshua Reynolds Thank You To Frank Baker and Jerry Reagan from the members of the West Millard Rodeo Club and their families for all their time and effort making the new indoor arena facilities so nice for us to practice We are looking forward to our 1st high school rodeo to be held in Delta Sept 2 and 22 1 WM Rec standings Women’s volleyball standings Dutson Supply Courtesy Hardware Rob’s Auto BodyDalton Motors Sperry Oil Walker Lumber Morrison FertilizerService Drug Delta Sports Ccn Rancher Cafe Sahara Motors Ladd's Lazrr Leveling Quality Thnftwsy Rick’s East Millard Sam's AlfalfaContinental Top’s Cafe Racquetball Div 1 Lime Alan Williams Leo Jaramillo Dave Spence Jeff Payne Deseret District Scouting honors great leadership On March 9 at 7:30 Scouters met to pay honor to those leaders who have given outstanding service to die youth of this area Floyd Eddie Dutson On January of this year one of the great Scout Leaders of this area retired Scouts and Scout leaders will miss this fine man and the good influence he was to the youth in Deseret District During the last 41 years there were about 42 boy who became Eagle Scouts under his influence Many ofthese boys later served missions for the LDS Church and two of them became Bishops for the church Ed started working as an assistant Scoutmaster in the fall of 1948 He also served as an Institutional Representative in his ward and was the neighborhood representative for Lynndyl Leamington and Oak City He loved the outdoors and went on many camps with the boys while serving in those positions In 1964 Ed was appointed Scoutmaster for Troop 150 in Leamington During this time he gathered scrap copper aluminum batteries newspapers etc to help raise the SME funds There were some people who thought it cost too much to keep the Scouting program going He could see the need to have Iderit Badge Counselors out in the wards where they were more available to the Scouts He talked to the District Leaders about this and helped arrange it He also thought Merit Badge Pow Wows should be held in the District so the boys wouldn’t have to travel a long way He thought the Scoutaramas should be held on a District Level and worked to help achieve that He stayed with the Scoutmasters job until the Lynndyl Ward was combined with the Leamington Ward in 1982 Dining some of those years the two wards had combined MIA so the troops worked together Sometimes Leamington had their own Scoutmaster and sometimes they didn’t but they worked together most of the time After the wards were combined it wasn’t long before he was ptidq Scpijtpyistp’ Troop 149 His great love in the program is the outdoor skills camping hiking survival etc He has had the Best Scoutmaster and top troop award in the District more than once He was awarded the 2nd Miler and Silver Beaver awards in 1975 He was awarded the Robert Baden Powell award one year at Camp Maple Dell He and Allen Wardle were the first two in the Deseret District to go to Wood Badge He won a scholarship from the Veterans of Foreign War to pay his way there It was one of only ten given in the United States He also received the District Award of Merit |
