several months Their goal is to read a total of one million minutes at home Principal Charles Ferguson challenged the students last fall to read a milium minutes at home before his birthday on May 13 He promised to walk a million inches (about 16 miles) if they reached their million minute goal But Ferguson’s challenge included a difficult catch Reading could be counted only on days when the students watched less than two hours of television “I didn’t want it to be easy for them” Ferguson stated “J jwaj pset'y sure tfiey could read a million minutes but I was also sure they were too addicted to television to turn it off after two hours each day" Ferguson may have underestimated his students Already they have reached 750000 minutes and with almost seven weeks left until the deadline Ferguson is beginning to get a little nervous Two years ago Ferguson made a similar challenge which resulted in his having to spend a day on the roof of his school after his students read a million pages Ferguson was forced to watch from above while his students enjoyed a Field Day below Now it looks as though his students may get to enjoy another Field Day while they watch the principal
