7 1864 with Jacob lire region Croft as first Postmaster then was known as Deseret Thomas Memmott was appointed Postmaster June 20 1866 Oak Creek was lirst settled July 20 1868 and Henry Roper was made Postmaster August 10 1868 The stage coach station was situated between Holden and illmore and the marl was brought here once a week on horseback In Mahonri and Nielson Bishop and later by DR Siesens was sent to the An application government asking that the Post Office be called Oak Creek hut as there was already an Oak Creek in Utah the (iovernment changed it to Oak City officially on March 17 1874 In 1880 the railroad was extended from Juab to risco near the Nevada state line This was a welcomed event for now it was only 14 miles from Oak City to the railtoad station at Utah This meant they could Mail was get mail twice a week Post Office brought on Mondays and Fridays from Leamington on horseback by Geroge Finlinson Later he carried the mail in a two wheel cart pulled by one horse This was known as the old mail cart and was used for many years In 1897 the people were granted daily mail and Henry Roper did not want to be bothered with it that often so Fred Lyman became the new Postmaster on December 11 1897 The mail boxes that had been in the Henry Roper home since soon after the coming of the Railroad were transferred to the Lyman Store (Oak City Cash Store) Ole H Jacobson became the Postmaster on February 5 1911 Edward L Lyman Jr was appointed Postmaster May 12 1911 was appointed Alfred Jacobson Postmaster February 4 1915 Walker was appointed Leroy Postmaster July 6 1915 During his administration a new Post Office building was constructed on the corner of the lot on which he lived which was one hall block east of Main Street City Post Office Silva A Lovell was appointed Postmaster December 9 1916 The Post Office building was moved down on Main Street on the lot south of the store was appointed Nielson Zella Postmaster October 31 1919 (name changed by marriage to Zella N Lovell) At this time six day mail service including holidays was given In 1934 seven day service was instituted Mail was now carried from Lynndyl by automobile Some of the carriers during this period were Mr Belliston Lem George D Shipley Roper Edgar Nielson and Clarence Nielson On April the 1st 1952 mail on national was and holidays Sundays discontinued The salary of the Postmaster was based on the stamps that were cancelled each day Many months this did not average a dollar a day It was a day of Fourth Class rejoicing when Postmasters were given a salary On June 30 1944 the Oak City Postmaster was given a slary of $82400 a year This averaged the Postmaster $225 a day for his services Dwain J Finlinson was appointed Postmaster June 30 1957 Permission was granted to him to build a new Post Office on the lot next to his home across the street from the store and one half block south of the old Post Office At the beginning of Mr building Finlinson’s tenure the new Metro Mail This provided system was initiated overnight delivery of mail to every office in the state The Wycoff Trucking Company took over the delivery star route and Clarence Nielson was the last of the local star route carriers It was at this time also that the Postal Department adopted the custom of having the US flag flown on all its Post Offices Mr Finlinson retired September 5 1978 Rex W Finlinson was placed in charge of the Oak City Office until a new Postmaster was appointed Mankin May 9 1979 Vaughn became Oak City Postmaster The office remained in the Finlinson building during which time the PSPS Real Estate Division was planning for a new Postal Leased facility The winning bid lor the project went to Build Inc of Bountiful Project foreman was Tom Jessup Salt Lake City The new facility was completed June 1988 and occupation took place July 12 The new office is a source of pride tor Postal Patrons and the communi-- t Community leaders have provided support for making the new site more accessible The area directly in front of the new building between the sidewalk and the road needed gravel spread and leveled Clarence East and other lesidents organized and accomplished this task The present Postmaster has the best ol both worlds: being part of a great community and being part of the best Postal Service in the world Note: historical data was provided J members and others to pay tribute to Paul and his wife for the long years of service given It takes a special ability to juggle the many different canal and streams while maintaining the reservoirs at the same time Paul has done this well and his service will be missed Head Walermaster retires a party was held for On August Paul Cahoon who lecently retired as head walermaster of the DMAD Reservoir Company Paul had served as a water mastei for 26 years giving many long hours of seivice Paul was given a plaque of “appreciation for the service he had given as a walermaster for 26 years 24 hours a day” Over the past 26 years Paul has worked with many different individuals who were affiliated with the irrigation by Sarah Inez Moody Police Chief Roger Young reported to City Council Monday evening that he and fellow officers had investigated the Cellar Club during the past two weekends and had found no basis to recommend closure A poll of adjoining neighbors to the popular nightspot disclosed no complaints other than the one originally lodged by Mr and Mrs Dwight Moody Further he reported that activities had been monitored and that on nights of the dances everyone had left and all was quiet by 1:45 am It was noted that Mrs Phyllis Munster ownermanager could legally remain open until 2:00 am during Daylight Savings Time 1:00 am is deadline during Standard Time City Council listened quietly as the chief gave his report and made very few comments or Mrs Munster and posed questions were in Mr and Mrs Moody attendance Conducting the meeting was Mayor Present were Ruth Hansen Rex Harris David Church Wes Bloomfield and Gayle Bunker Councilman Don Dafoe was excused Others Richard present included Attorney Recorder Dorothy JefWaddingham fery Treasurer Doyle Bender Second order of business was a brief discussion on the proposed West Delta Annexation led by Councilman Wes Bloomfield Wording on the petition has been changed and now signatures of property owners will be sought The petition will be presented to Delta’s Planning and Zoning Commission for perusal after which that commission to City will make recommendations Council for action Attorney Waddingham discussed an Animal Control Services Agreement that the city will be signing with Dr HW Nielsen vet in the very near future A fiat fee of $17500 a month will be paid to Dr Nielsen by the city for his services It was noted that a charge of $400 a day is paid by the Leamarado Day Leamarado Day will be celebrated on Monday September 5 in Leamington The festivities will begin with a program at 10:30 am Dinner
