A while ago we learned that a handicapped girl in our neighborhood saves aluminum cans which she sells to recycling companies and she uses the proceeds for spending money and Christmas presents So we’re saving them for her Inasmuch as my spouse and I do a lot of walking we started taking along a plastic bag and picking up cans as we walked It became very fascinating we never imagined there were so many different brands of beverage As a matter of fact my brother and his wife came to visit a short time ago and we took them to Maple Grove The first had them walking thing they knew along the highway together with my spouse Tweetie picking up beer cans It’s a sad commentary on Americans that they throw them out their car windows but that’s where we find them We recently returned from a tour of a couple of western states The grandeur of the scenery is breathtaking but I must admit I found myself looking frequently at the ground and missing some of the beauty above me Well to each his own There Ottley’s Oddball Observation: isn’t much charity in giving away something you don’t want Every morning at about 7:15 am a young man in a wheelchair pushes his way us a steep hill His arm muscle strains His face takes on a look of pain Or is it resolve? The wheelchair’s progress is as tedious as a turtle’s But every day this makes it to the top of that hill That young man’s destination is school He has something that some students It’s have don’t called He does well in getting himself to school and he does well after he gets there But what about all those students who don’t have that kind of selfgenerated desire? I would like you to know what great lifeguards we have at the West Millard of Swimming Pool I took a group young boys there to swim One boy got into a situation deeper than he could one in which the length of time and temperature of the food in the jar have been measured to insure that all microorganisms have been destroyed or prevented from forming any harmful toxins Both the internal temperature of tbe food and the amount of time it remains at a given temperature are necessary to insure a safe process Other things that must be taken to consideration are that foods reach a given temperature faster in steam than in a boiling water bath Heat penetrates thick soup more slowly than water he says Also he says altering recipes by adfoods such as onions ding zucchini peppers and carrots to foods such as tomatoes reduces the acidity of the final product All these factors affect the safety of a given canning process So how can a consumer insure that a product is safe without the equipment to measure temperature heat penetration rates acidity etc? “They can’t There simply is no way consumers can insure the safety of an untested recipe So please only use tested recipes from reliable sources and don’t make alterations” Mendenhall warns If in doubt preserve the food by freezing it Or in the case of zucchini set them out near the driveway and hope someone will accidentally run over them lm 1 Rugm him and handle The lifeguard saw saved him I would like jumped in and his expert to thank Corey Larsen for decision and effort Sincerely Vicki Allen Mv Opinion Getting away with murder by Evelyn Mallet That is literally what Robert William Bott and George Wesley Hamilton have been able to do with the help of their attorneys and an unfortunate slip up of details Most people feel the outcome of this grisly case is a disgrace to law and justice and certainly a black eye to the state of Utah Not only have these two gotten away with murder so have the infamous Hi Fi killers for almost 14 years True Selby has now paid the price but his accomplice is still languishing in jail his sentence not yet pronounced but when it is who knows how lenient his judge will? Perhaps it will be a ridiculous like the one sentence Hamilton received-fiyears to life and then in about 10 years some “kind” Board of Pardons will set him free as has been the case with so many criminals serving life or for many years As always the criminals must be given their rights and protected from being unjustly dealt with No matter about the victim and the victim’s family’s rights They only receive our sympathy One asks the question that if Selby was found quilty and was sentenced to death at his trial why was it not carried out until almost 14 years later All this time the citizens of Utah payed and payed as appeal after appeal was invoked by his attorneys Technically his lawyers ought to be jailed for obstruction in carrying out the law and for aiding and abetting a criminal! Criminals are assigned attorneys to defend their case if they cannot afford to hire one These are sometimes known as criminal lawyers who are not always interested in justice but expressly use every means available to get the criminal either freed or with as light a prison term as possible Many times the accused has the right to request a certain attorney The county by law must pay for both the prosectuion and defense for not only the trial but also the penalty hearings and at least two appeals The longer an attorney can prolong a case the longer he is on the state or county payroll and the citizens of Utah’s counties are paying him a comfortable salary No wonder the Hi Fi case went on and on for so many years Every ridiculous shred of technicality that could possibly be conjured up was used to prolong the case and the judges ruled in favor It was as if the jury’s conclusions at the trial were of no consequence merely a formality I have been watching for any articles or letters written to the Chronicle Progress about the outcome of the Sharon Sant case the defendants and their subsequent sentences No one seems concerned enough to want something done to correct the injustices Of course the only way anything can be cone is to change the State of Utah laws so that criminals do not have all the advantages Having sympathy for victims and their families is not enough We as citizens need to make our disapproval known to our State Legislature Only they can change the laws and they will not unless we demand it If a murder was committed against a member of your family you would want the laws in your favor not the criminal’s! Write to your State Senators and for that matter your US Senators and Representatives and ask that the laws of this state and country be changed so that sentences on criminals be carried out to the letter Once a sentence has been let there be no more appeals immunity or plea bargaining where there may be an obstruction of justice and let there be no more Board of Pardons for murderers It has been proven hundreds of times that leniency with criminals does not deter crime it enhances it On West Millard History books by Sarah Inez Moody have been on the horns of a dilemma The source is the West Millard History Book (s) If I have my facts correct the idea of a new history book of West Millard County was born at the Millard County Progress office A logical place for such birth in my opinion Sue Dutson editor of the newspaper broached the idea of Mrs Lenore McCall Apparently Mrs McCall liked the idea as she agreed to serve as Project Chairman The Chronicle began Progress publishing articles on the project and response from area residents was gratifying Articles and pictures were being submitted to both the Chronicle Progress and to Mrs McCall The Chronicle Progress asked me to do a series of articles on the 1960’s which would include the construction of Delta High School realignment of the Millard School District Precincts impact of the construction of the Biush Beryllium mill Millard County’s first Grand Jury Vietnam War and how it affected the area etc (Longtime Chronicle readers will recall that I was editor of the paper during that decade) I agreed to attempt writing the articles Sue granted me access to the Chronicle files if I needed additional information The Chronicle staff informed me that Mrs McCall would be calling me for a more in depth discussion of the articles When she didn’t call until more recently I assumed that she had made arrangements with other area residents who like working with words to cover those topics That was all right with me The success of the book meant more to me than who would be the contributors Since publicity is a necessary ingredient for such an undertaking the Chronicle Progress has not stinted on providing that publicity Since March 12 1987 it has given a whopping 734 inches of space to publish articles to form the readers on the progress of the project and soliciting contributions This 734 inches include the publishing of 25 pictures I spent the better part of Friday afternoon October 9 researching files to find articles and pictures had that the Chronicle Progress published since March 12 And I measured them So know of whereof I speak When this amount of space and pictures is computed into dollars and cents using today’s advertising rates it totals $300940 In my opinion that’s a lot of giving but typical Sue She’s admired I B In POSTMASTER Think about this: If a student doesn’t want to learn in school chances are that kid won’t learn So the trick is to change that youngster’s attitude It can be done and it won’t take a hickory switch to accomplish it In this world one of the best ways to show you love and respect your children is to invest one of your most valuable assets Experimentation: Don’t Consumer EDITOR K uJ SPORTS MED The Big Bruise “It’s just a bruise” More athletes than not have heard this statement Where the bruise is located how severe it is and how it is initially managed can often affect an athlete and his future performance Bruises or contusions are produced by bleeding and swelling but does not completely disrupt the function of the muscle Contusions can occur from a direct blow by an opponent’s helmet knee or any other body part Contusions to the quadriceps (front thigh muscle) or brachialis muscle (upper arm underneath the biceps) are common in contact sports and it is imperative proper care is given initially or career ending result may occur These two muscles are very prone to myositis ossificans tramatica or calcium deposits in the muscle as a result of the trauma A contusion in any area should be treated immediately with ice and compression Two revolutions with a moist ace wrap and then wrap an ice bag over the area with the rest of the ace will sure good compression and cooling to stop the bleeding initially and thus minimize the bruise With a contusion to the quadriceps area the athlete should be wrapped as above The athlete should be lying on his stomach and the knee bent as far as possible without pain and held in position with an ace wrap around ankle and have athlete hold other end The knee must not be forced into bending Ice should be applied minutes at a time and then taken off for 20 minutes This position should te maintained with the ice for hours takminute breaks every hour ing The athlete should be on crutches during this period If the athlete has full TO THE Typical of Lenore to persuade ingness was her willmany local residents to share their information for the book She’s to be admired These ladies both of them all in West Millard County and have literally spent hours and hours on community service projects most frequently at their own expense No service project is of more importance than this book that would have brought their talents together was dismayed to learn that Lenore had stepped aside because of her health In a telephone call to me last week she assured me that her health had played a part in her decision but the deciding factor was the amount of bookwork required on the project She then asked if I would help her on her book-entirely different writing on the same topics as the Chronicle Progress had asked earlier At first said “yes” providing she understood that whatever I wrote would also be submitted to Book No But I’ve reneged on that ”yes” for the following reasons: Two books being compiled simultaneously and on the same subjects tend to reduce the whole project from one of importance to personalities 2 If both books go forward would it not prove to be more costly to the reading public? A reader would probably think both books would more adequately cover the area than one alone 3 I wonder if one book would be considered factual while the other would be considered fictional Would one be considered the “official” history of West Millard County while the other was not? The official one to me would be the Chronicle is a dilemma in my opinion 4 I would need to research the Chronicle Progress files for anything I did on the 60’s In good conscience I cannot ask for that privilege for articles in a second book To me that smacks of being unethical I just can’t do it 5 My own contributions will be submitted to Book No The Chronicle Progress broached the subject to me before Mrs I obligated McCall myself I suggest that another volunteer be lint J up to relieve Lenore of the bookkeeping responsibilities and let her continue unhampered by that added chore with the original book One complete book will serve W'est Millard area residents much better than two Just recently a lady of Fillmore told me “you people on the west side of this county get what you want because you stay unified and work towards a common goal” That’s a high praise in my opinion Can’' we be united on THE book? |
