announced he will seek the office of Treasurer of the Utah State Republican Party at its organizing convention on June 20 1987 at Cottonwood High School Mr Call a certified public accountant is resources in order to continue to be a dominate force in Utah politics” Call said Party delegates chosen at last years neighborhood mass meetings will vote for a full slate of state officers during the convention Over 1500 delegates are expected to attend Federal in Millard expenditures County rose by SI 045 000 or 46 percent during 1986 This was reported by Utah Foundation the private tax research oganization in their regular annual analysis of federal spending in Utah counties According to the Foundation study federal outlays in Millard County last year totaled $23895000 This compares with federal spending of $22850000 during fiscal capita or 209 percent of the personal income of the county The 1986 federal spending included $485000 by the Defense Department $6092000 for grant awards $9509000 for retirement and disability payments and $1822000 for nondefense contracts Federal expenditures include (1) grant awards to state and local governments individuals and other institutions (2) federal salary and wage payments (3) disbursements for social security federal retirement and employee disability programs (4) other payments and benefits to individuals (5) procurement contracts and (6) miscellaneous federal outlays Not included in this summary are federal expenditures that for on e reason or another could not be allocated to a particular state andor county When an employer (such as the federal government) pays no taxes its employees can become a net financial liability to the state and the community because the cost of governmental for education services provided highways health etc to the employee and his family may be considerably greater than the direct taxes paid Thus the excess cost of such services must be borne by other taxpayers through In some instances higher taxes however the federal government does make “payments in lieu of taxes” to help offset part of this cost BLMFS coordination meeting The Bureau of Land Management Richfield District and Fishlake National Forest Service met in Richfield Utah to discuss how they could share manpower equipment and other services in order to save money and increase efficiency The two agencies have been working together for many years and the efforts are showing many cost savings to the taxpayer The jobs are being completed as planned but sharing crews eliminates duplication of travel and equipment Areas of major sharing have been with road maintenance toilet facility care garbage pickup blasting of equipment training transportation and fire fighting activities This year the Richfield District and Fishlake Forest decided to start sharing in several new areas such as sharing on range projects water rights weed control range and wildlife condition information and the coordination of off road vehicle management Overall the efforts by both agencies to share people facilities and equipment have expanded capabilities of both agencies agreed Don Pendleton District Manager for the Richfield BLM and Kent Taylor Forest Supervisor for the Fishlake National Forest During times of tight budgets every avenue to save money while getting the job done must be explored award for First Lady Nancy Reagan Mrs Reagan was chosen to receive the award in recognition of her interest in youth and appreciation for directing attention to the need for a nationwide drug abuse prevention effort Senator Garn will accept the award for Mrs Reagan at 9 am Monday June 22 in the Main Ballroom of the Olpin Union Building on the University of Utah Campus After Senator Gam’s three names to Governor Norman H Bangerter for his consideration in replacing Judge J Phillip Eves who is now a judge in the 5th District The nominees are: Robert Todd Braithwaite 36 the city attorney for Cedar City Parowan and Springdale and a private law practitioner Paul Fenwick Graf 40 the Washington and Michael Dean County Attorney Hughes 39 a partner in the St George law firm of Thompson itself amoung the leading in constructively states confronting the issues related to gender stereotyping in the courts Late last year the Judicial Council of the authorized the establishment Utah Task Force on Gender and Justice Because gender bias undermines the fair administration of justice Justice Hall recognized the necessity for inquiring into the existence and extent of such bias in Utah He charged the task force with determining the nature extent and consequences of gender bias in Utah urging the group to consider both substantive and procedural is exThe law force of the task aspects pected to make concrete recommendations and to monitor progress as changes may occur over the long term The task force is chaired by Aileen Clyde a citizen volunteer and longtime supporter of the judiciary In addition to her responsibilities with the Gender and Justice Task Force Ms Clyde currently chairs the Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice She has served as chair of the Judicial Barben Mrs Keith Barben and Mrs Joe Stewart left for a trip traveling 1000 miles sightseeing They traveled to Boulder UT down the “talked about” Burr Trail The Federal Judge and his party were also traveling the trail and trying to decide what to do about the “trail” roads The Barben party then traveled to Bull Frog where they rode the ferry boat across to Halls Crossing a 20 minute ferry ride They then traveled to Natural Bridges Blanding Bluff Moab Castle Valley They traveled Arches National through Park Canyonlands Dead Horse Point Goblin Valley Capitol Reef Park and saw all of the beautiful and interesting places and areas in between The weather was great all the way and the Keith Barben van was a very nice and comfortable way of traveling On the last leg of the together marvelous trip they stopped in Bicknell and tried a piece of the famous “Pickle Pie” made by “Carla Ekker” famous for her good pie making The beautiful scenery was enjoyed and the trip was a very fun and great experience for all They all returned home early Thursday morning June 11 On Saturday June 6 Archie and Edor dys Barben attended graduation commencement exercises at Snow College in Ephraim UT where their grandson Jeffery Barben graduated as an honor student This was the 99th Annual Commencement Exercise for Snow College They met Jeffery’s parents Mrs Keith Barben in Ephraim and they all enjoyed the day together Arch and Eddys Barben have 5 graduates this year 2 from Jr College and 3 from high school experience proClyde’s background ven leadership skills and commitment to the issues
