Show - ¥ s Rotary district convention More than 400 Rotarians and their wives from Utah are gathering today through Saturday May 7 to' 9 at the Excelsior Hotel in Provo for the annual district convention There are 32 clubs in the district under the leadership of D Creed Brimhall Provo district governor The opening ceremonies scheduled for this evening will be held at the Provo Tabernacle beginning at 7:30 pm They will feature the Orem High School Symphonic Band The US Marine Corps honor guard will present the' colors Keynote speaker for the evening will be US District Judge David Sam A special presentation will be made by the Rotary Young Exchange group consisting of thirteen foreign students who have lived within District 542 during the past year and fourteen Utah students who will be placed in foreign countries this coming year Frank J Sladen Jr personal of the President of representative is scheduled to Rotary International give the keynote address to the delegation on Friday He will again address the group Saturday evening at the Governor banquet Other noted personalities will speak at different meetings during the convention They include Howard J Ruff editor of Ruff Times Dr W Lloyd Johns past district governor of California and D Larry Anderson director of the Utah Division of Water Resources Friday afternoon will be open for a men’s golf tournament and a ladies’ bridge tournament at Riverside Country Club as well as city tours to Provo Town Square BYU and other points of interest Saturday’s entertainment will includenational football league follies presented by Phil Tucket film editor with the NFL The women will meet at Riverside Country Club for a luncheon and program on theatrical productions by Ruth and Nathan Hale of Hale Center Theater A special feature of the convention will be EXPO ’87 which will be at the Excelsior It is a display of community service and community project hibits that the various Rotary clubs have been involved with during the past year National Tourism Week To promote National Tourism Week scheduled for May 17 to 23 1987 one of the nine travel Panoramaland regions for the State of Utah is sponsoring both an essay and poster contest High school students will be asked to write an essay on ‘‘My Best while in Panoramaland” Vacation and junior high school elementary students will do posters on a similar theme for their schools In each category high school and both elementary and middle school students first place winners will receive $10 and second place winners $5 All entries will become the property and will not be of Panoramaland Entries should contain the returned name of student age grade level name and address of school In the Sevier County Area the Sevier will handle the Valley Innkeepers publics help by staying off the road while it is being reconstructed so the contractor can complete his job in a Call for artwork by handicapped persons Mother’s Day: Very Special Arts Utah in conjunction with the University of Utah has announced a call for artwork by hanThe art is for dicapped individuals competition and display at the 2nd annual statewide Very Special Arts Festival at the University of Utah Union Building on May 16 The exhibit will open May 10 and fun through May 18 Open to all handicapped persons regardless of age or disability the hibit provides an opportunity for people with special needs to showcase their artistic abilities “Likewise the exhibit enables viewers to gain insight into the lives personalities abilities of hanindividuals” says State dicapped Festival Kathleen Mason “Upon viewing the works an onlooker may enjoy the pieces for their artistic excellence It is not until one gets closer to read accompanying cards which will list the artist and title of the work that discovery of the artist’s disability is made” continues Mason Downplaying disabilities of the artists in favor of the art itself is a definitive tactic in striving to build and The idea of officially honoring mothers may be less than 100 years old in the United States but goes back centuries in other parts of the world According to The World Book Encyclopedia ancient civilizations — such as the Greeks Assyrians and Romans — nature’s creative powers compared with those of a mother because they believed a mother is the source of life A day for honoring mothers was observed many years ago in England In the United and in Yugoslavia States people began holding their own celebrations in honor of their mothers but it was Julia Ward Howe in 1872 who made the first for an official known suggestion Mother’s Day In 1907 Anna Jarvis and of Graphton West Virginia Philadelphia Pennsylvania began a campaign for a nationwide obser a 1912 Mother’s of vance Day By delegate from her church introduced '! ‘‘ " - ' resolution naming her the founder el Mothar's Day and the second in May as the day of Sunday observance Finally on May 19 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a joint resolution of Congress recommending the government’s recognition of Mother’s in Diy This led to the proclamation 1915 of the national observance of Mother’s Day each Spring This Mother’s Day (Sunday May 10) why not take time out to recognize the vital roles mothers play in our lives There is perhaps no group of our more deserving ippreciation a 5020 Hike details and registration The hike consists of 50 miles in 20 hours or less on foot or knee The hike will take place on May 15 1987 at 7 pm Registration or preregistration check in starts at 6:15 Starting point is a quarter mile east of pioneer potato sign in McCornick Ending point is the Kanosh church Participants must be between the ages of 11 years and 99 years Registration fee includes cap for all participants and trophy for each individual who completes the hike within 20 hours of starting time The registration fee is $500 if preregistered by May 10 or $600 if registered at starting point Parents must sign registration form on all participants under age 18 Drinking water provided at check points Check points are staffed by Millard County Sheriff Posse The hike is sponsored by the Millard District BSA 7 May - 1987 Page 9 CUB SCOUT NEWS Edith Dearden by Nikki Hirschi Last month’s pack meeting’s theme was “Family Show Time” Both Den I and Den II presented skits in keeping with this month’s theme Trina Gardner Den I’s Leader along with it’s members which include DJ Hoggard Casey Cropper and Nathan Hirschi entertained the audience with a “Spoof” on the nature hunt Linda Smith and her den Den II gave us all a laugh when they sang us a song about having fun at McDonalds After finishing this skit the members of Den II painted faces on their chins and made us all chuckle with their next skit A round of applause for Den II and their leader for their wonderful ideas The members of Den II include Jason Mortensen Cannon Hammeker Brooke Talbot Brent Smith and Steven Howes During the pack meeting all the boys were given a "Genius Kit” The kit cludes items like pipe cleaners a piece of wood string nails thumb tacks a can a piece of cloth and other things All the boys were instructed on how to use this kit to make an invention of their choice All inventions will be entered in a contest and judged as to which was made by the most ingenius genius in the pack at the meeting in May Good inventing guys!
