Show Millard County s USPS Thurs May ' 7 1987 Page 7 SUSC speaks students’ foreign language The foreign language department at DHS went on its one and only competition trip to SUSC on April 24 About 25 students enrolled in Spanish classes and 17 in French classes competed The Spanish language students competed in various areas such as a general test conversation oratory and memorization of a poem They also watched a movie on Spain and then answered questions Finally they had an oral vocabulary test Individual winners in Spanish were Melanie Larsen First in conversation Mike Reese third in conversation Mitch Atkinson first in oratory The advanced Spanish second place winner was Janice Richards She also placed second on the questions on the movie Mr Wiscombe the Spanish teacher said “About twenty 2 and 3A schools throughout Utah competed at SUSC this year” The French classes competed in six categories: general excellency dictation recitation vocabulary oratory and original poetry Ms Peterson the French teacher explained “In the original poetry contest the students had to write their own poem in French” The French I Merrill Wright and Heather Clarke won third place in vocabulary Jodi Peterson was second in oratory with Val Moore third Jodi Peterson was third in original poetry Gary Rose placed third in dictation Tammie Bean an advanced Spanish student said “It was an educational experience and really neat to see so in foreign many people interested THEN - Our NOW - Eagle 'building" collection of newspapers languages” SSSSSI8MSMM8SSaSiiWWW May Day Delta North Elementary In DELTA SOUTH Elementary combined first grades presented their annual Spring May Day program The youngsters put it on Friday morning for the studentbody and in the afternoon for the parents A big Coyote card to you first graders and to your teachers for a very outstanding job THE The News i mgtiwtamwwwsawwwmi DNES 4th grade field trip On Thursday April 30 at 6:45 am the DNES fourth graders boarded busses and headed for Salt Lake City We visited the Hansen Planetarium and the Museum of Natural History at the University of Utah At the museum we dinosaurs lockenjoyed three ed in combat the world’s first set of pterodactyl tracks and many dioramas At the planetarium we observed air pressure and the lack of it by doing Then we settled several experiments down into comfy seats to watch “The Star Show” a projection program which taught us about stars constellations planets galaxies and light on a screen which covered the ceiling above us like the night sky by Paula Suggs Cindy Huber visits fourthIil grades DU Chapter I nominated jnwjci-- ' Mrs Kapler’s Science class was privileged to have a very exciting visitor last week We have been studying our bodies and how to keep them healthy Hannah Mrs Cindy Huber (Farrah and Steven’s Mom) a registered nurse came to tell us about her interesting job We saw a real appendix a tape worm a gall stone and a liver fluke We had great fun practicing giving shots to a grapefruit! Mrs Huber showed us how doctors dressed when they did operations and explained to us why they had to stay so clean We got to listen to our own hearts through a stethoscope and see germs from dirty hands growing in a petri dish Mrs Huber was most interesting to listen to We enjoyed the many things she brought with her to show us We her visit and appreciate certainly welcome her back to Delta North Elementary Chapter was nominated for national honors because of the outstanding program we have at our school This honor was made known by Mr Dave Church Chapter I District Supervisor Hats off to you Lara Pilling LaWana Peterson and Kay Reece for the high quality of service you are rendering to our students THE DELTA SOUTH by Nola Kapler grade spellbound 520 E Topaz Blvd at on Hwy 6 the Pendray Plaza Warner Scout project benefits library Something new has been added to the Fillmore Library porch Chris Warner a scout from the Fillmore cond Ward has been working on the project now complete to furnish the library with a newspaper bin for recycling newspapers Once before the library started to collect old newspapers for recycling but the Fillmore Elementary School 3rd grade began a drive to earn a computer so the library donated all their collection to the students The library has now begun a new drive for the benefit of the special activities portion of the library services These funds will be used to help enrich the Summer Reading program and other programs for the children The company receiving the papers uses them for packing material and has already received 13 boxes of papers at the time of the move into the new facility Chris was assisted in his project by his parents Ross and Linda Warner and by his friend also a scout Matt Funk They put in 40'i hours of work The materials were donated bv the family as their annual donation to the library Chris reinforced the donation by working at Warner Motors with his father and grandfather The Boy Scouts of the area should be commended for the great contributions their projects make to the community The work is always cheerfully and carefully performed for the good of others The Library Board and Mrs Hunter librarian wish to thank Chris and his committee for this attractive new bin As can be seen by the pictures it was a project Newspapers may be brought to the bin in grocery sacks and placed inside where the wind and snow cannot get at them When the bin is full they will be sold and the bin readied for a new batch The Library Board wishes to thank the patrons for the help it receives in all our projects from the members of all the east Millard communities Richfield and Millard high schools displayed their muscle in skills recently at South Utah State College winning livestock and soil judging contests in annual Ag Day competition Second place in livestock judging went to Jayson dividual competition Quarnberg of Millard High School closely followed by Sarah Adams the third place winner who is also from Millard High Millard continued a long winning streak in soil judging with four MHS students crowded into the winners circle David Whitaker finished first followed by Jeff Quarnberg in second place and Jake DeGraffenried and Jeff Gehre tied for third The Delta MoDel has been judged the best high school newspaper in its class in competition sponsored by the University of Utah Communication Department and The Deseret News The MoDel was rated “best newspaper” in the 2A class which consists of high schools with about 600 students The sponsor of the paper is Jane Beckwith Deseret News reporters and editors who served as judges ranked the MoDel first in straight news features sports photography layout and typography and art It received certificates for each category and a plaque for being first place PLAZA TWIN THEATRE Ross Area students win in Ag Day contests MoDel best in state anytime Scout project Chris and SUSC honor roll Millard County students named to the winter quarter honor roll at Southern Utah State College are: Delta: Kimberly Ekins (secretarial) Kirtt M Myers (business administration) and Deborah L Wardle (secretarial) Fillmore: Shane B Allgood (electronics and Candace technology) Swallow (secretarial) Hinckley: Hazel T Maben (elementary education) and Kimberly A Redo erinary) Holden: Michele Stevens (elementary education) Oak City: Mel Dutson (business adminstration) Twin 7 & 9 pm PLAZA LANES Twin Summer Break Open Bowling Weeknights 2 7:15 8 9:15 & pm 3 pm -
