was quite a bit of excitement at my house on a day around the last week in July My dog Andee can open the kitchen screen door when she wants to go outside She usually hits it so hard with her front paws that it swings wide open On this particular occasion one of my cats was on the porch with a young sparrow clutched between her teeth when the door swung open she took this fine opportunity to dash into the house When I heard a bird screeching with fright and saw my cat running through the house looking for a place to hide and eat her prize catch without having to battle with the other cats for ownership I hurriedly got the broom and tried to get her back outside before she let go of the bird If this happened then I would have two moving critters to deal with Tina let go and Well it happened the sparrow quickly scampered between a cupboard and the range I used the broom to try to get it out but is scurried to the wall and under the stove to an unreachable deep dark place I mov- - this is the one hundredth birthday of the house where Ella was in 1886 by her father and ed the cupboard away from the wall but the stove was too heavy and there was no way I could move it I thought maybe the noisy bird would encourage Tina to inch her way behind the stove and retrieve the fat little sparrow for her supper but the space between the and well and stove was too narrow though Tina tried a couple of times she finally decided she was too big for so small a space and retreated to a kitchen chair to sit and wait for a better opporLike maybe the bird might tunity come out on its own but no such luck One at a time I called the cats to come in Each one tried to reach the bird but each fat little cat was unsuccessful Hours went by and I was at my wits end trying to decide what to do and trying oh so hard to endure the loud screeching of that frightened little bird I finally went to my sisters and spent a couple of hours trying to think the situation over in the peace and quiet of her home no asking her to help me move the stove because of her painful back It crossed my mind that the bird might come out of hiding if the house was quiet Upon returning home I found sitting on my kitchen porch my male cat he is young not yet a year old with a long body short slick jet black fur and quite thin because he had been away from home for a few days I said to him “Mickey you have come home just in time to help me solve a problem and to catch yourself a nice juicy supper” I opened the door and he ran toward the sound of the bird and without hestitating he moved easily and quietly along the wall disappeared under the stove and within seconds he was striding across the kitchen floor with his catch I opened the door and he left on the run taking his prize to some secluded spot where he could enjoy his supper in peace That evening enjoyed my supper in peace too HOLDEN !olRS)EM of Open & Operating At All Three Locations Fillmore-Beaver-Nep- hi Daily Luncheon & Dinner Specials Librarian's Workshop The workshop for librarians at the University of Utah last week was surely a worthwhile endeavor Over 40 librarians from small libraries throughout the state were in attendance from Monday through Friday to upgrade their skills in running libraries The project was funded through the Utah State Library Commission The classes were of great value but the interchange of ideas and experiences among the librarians was of even greater value We all learned that we have very similar problems and challenges The variety of solutions was enlightening and in some cases surprising Some city councils support the library 100 percent and others couldn’t care less it all seemed to depend on the attitude or the citizens We feel very good about the support of our citizens and wish to say thanks for the support both morally and financially We have almost made it over the hill to a new facility which we will all be proud of and enjoy See you in the library Many people believe that we owe the comfort of Benjamin Franklin No proof of a rocker prior to hit the rocking chair to hat come to light |
