DSCs freshman third baseman Yuto Kata then marked RBI with a walk, which had the three. The second game, however, was a bit closer than expected. The pitcher did a really good job pitching and kept us off balance, said junior centerfielder Garrett Nash, a business major from Draper. Junior pitcher Austin Christiansen pitched la8ed, bases loaded. Nash then brought junior catcher Mitch Manning in on a sacrifice fly ball to tie the game. The defense for both teams kept each other from scoring until the home run of junior right fielder Cedric Johnson gave DSC the 2 win. Unfortunately, DSC didnt end the first game Monday with the prior results. The Red Storm led the game 1 until the top of the fifth inning when the Yellowjackets tied up the game at three. MSUB was at the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. This was DSCs time to shut the Yellow Jackets down. But Dixie didnt do it. And it did. In the last game of the series Dixie didnt have any problems hitting against MSUBs starting pitcher. Yack brought home Nash and Johnson, followed by an RBI double. Joe Andrade added RBI single and later brought Johnson home a second time in the third inning. The night wasnt quite over until Littlewood hit a solo homerun, which gave DSC the 0 win. I feel OK, head coach Mike Littlewood said. I dont feel great about it because the one loss hurts. Overall it was good, but there are some things we need to work 5-- on. Littlewood said the team is ready for its next game against Colorado Mesa University. Theyre big games, Littlewood said. Well throw anyone we can, and itll be a battle. Itll be a good couple games. The Dixie State baseball team plays March 13 at the Bruce Hurst Field at 1 p.m. Theyre a real good team, so I expect some real good competition, Nash said. season ends on negative note Meanwhile, the Antelopes converted on more than half of their shots and pushed the lead to as many as 20 points before holding on for the victory. Head coach Angie Kristensen said the team executed its game plan, but it came down to things out of the teams control. Honestly the girls played hard, Kristensen said. We cant control shooting and when you shoot 29 percent youre not going to beat the 16th ranked team in the nation. Senior guard Sheila Adams led the Red Storm in scoring with 16 points nt and junior center Becca Thomas added 10 points in only 13 minutes of play. Junior forward Breeona Bellamy logged a season-hig- h 17 minutes and provided a spark off the bench with eight points and seven rebounds. Freshman forward Kirsten Liana grabbed eight rebounds and had a steal to lead the Red staStorm in tistics in just her second career start at Dixie. However, in a winsituation, the that matstatistic only numbers on the was tered the scoreboard when the buzzer sounds.1 It just wasnt our non-scori- - night, Kristensen said. We had good looks and everything. We just didnt capitalize. And now the Red Storm will have to wait until next season to bounce back as the loss to GCU dashed any hopes of making the postseason. Thanks to an early season loss to California State University Los k Angeles and losses to California Baptist University, the Red Storm desperately needed a win over the Antelopes to even be considered for inclusion in the NCAA Division II tournament. However, the Red Storm saved the selection back-to-bac- committee from having to make a tough decision by losing to the Antelopes. If we could go back and play some of those early games again, I would love to do that, Kristensen said. It wasnt so much the Grand Canyon loss that hurt us. It was the Cal State-L- A (loss). Thats the loss that took us out of the tournament. This loss brought not only the end of a season, but also brought the end of competitive basketball for the seniors on the Red Storm squad. Senior guard Gabriella Rodriguez said the fact that it was her last game ite pfi a was almost harder than the loss itself. Ive been playing since I was 5 years old, and this is the last time Im actually going to play in an environment like this, said Rodriguez, an integrated studies major from West Jordan. That was one of the hardest things and of course youre thinking if we would have won, we would have kept playing. As the Red Storm close the door on the current season and prepare for the future, perhaps they can find solace in the fact that they are not alone. Only one team out of the hundreds that compete ends its season in victory. MM |
