DSCSA Service Chair Gabe Phillips, a senior communication major from Hurricane, was going through his closet one day and realized he had a lot of clothes he no longer used. This inspired him to put on the clothing drive. The clothing drive takes place during the next two days, and all students need to do is look for the laundry bins located in every building Posters will be attached to the laundry bins to show they are for the clothing drive. Just place clothes into the bins to donate. Phillips and the rest of the service committee will check on the bins throughout the next two days to gather donated clothes. Ive acquired tons of Dixie shirts (and) tons of other shirts, Phillips said. I realized theres a lot of stuff Im not putting to use that other people could. Phillips said he and the rest of the service committee decided to donate the clothes to The Hope Chest because the clothes Student-TeacheBY RICHARD BRIGGS Editor in Chief Its not against the rules, but its strongly discouraged. The rule regarding consensual relationships on campus is defined in the Dixie State College of Utah Policies and Procedures under Discrimina-tionSexuHarassment section 30.5. Actions of faculty members and students that harm this atmosphere undermine professionalism and hinder fulfillment of the Colleges educational mission. Trust and respect are diminished when those in positions of authority abuse or appear to abuse their power. In addition, inappropriate sexual relationships have myriad other negative effects on the lives and families of faculty, staff and students. Professional ethics require that faculty members strictly avoid consensual relationships with students under their direct supervision. Will Craver, assistant director in the human resources department, said these kinds of relationships are discouraged to maintain the integrity of the institution. Its not something we encourage because of the potential negative effect that could arise from such relationships, Craver said. DSC does not want to create any environment where the educational mission of this institution is compromised or tarnished in any way. The biggest concern here is a situation where faculty who are in a position of authority abuses or appear to abuse his or her positiqp. Craver also said these consensual relationships should be avoided even when students are not taking classes from those faculty members. He said the reason for this is that there is always the potential students will end up taking classes from those professors. If this situation occurs the faculty member must be as transparent as possible with the proper authority in his or her line of supervision, he said. A relationship of this kind can be damaging for all concerned, including the institution. We try not to get in to our employees personal life but at the same time hope they ml use good, sound professional judgment. Craver said the same would apply to staff employees as well, such as staff members who BYC an supervising students or staff employ ees who are workings work-stud- adjuncts.
