Show -- 12- DIXIE SUN WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER POLL continued from page 10 According to the educational company Inspiration Software, Research in both educational theory and cognitive psychology tells us that visual learning is among the very best methods for teaching students of all ages how to think and how to learn. All of my current professors use visual technology in class as part of teaching. They do this because it enhances the ability of a student to learn in a tight time period. Isnt the purpose of class, at any level, to enhance the level of a students knowledge or ability? Visual technology helps accomplish this in an intense college schedule. Some may say visual technology is used too much. Look at how much time Americans watch TV. According to an economic news release done by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Americans spend an average of 2.7 hours per day watching TV. Honestly, this is more time watching TV than I would choose, but thats just it. The ability to choose is a privilege. Any claim on the dangers of visual technology comes down to an individuals choice. The claim of watching too much TV is erroneously skewed in my opinion but should be directed at the choice of TV con- Ask Amanda: No room for cheaters on DSC campus BY AMANDA JACOBS " on The inside of Pi ?1 Bi' flflsweRs 1 eyelid Dear Amanda, of vi- sual technology should be directed at the content choice of the user. Does a person fiddle away time by pointless visual indulgences or does a person use it as a tool of production, time management, composition and knowledge enhancement? This is the real concern at hand. I spend just as much time using visual technology now as I did as a teenager. The only difference is my choice of content. I use the time to enhance my knowledge, tune up my skills, fuel my creativity and, of course, have a good laugh. The time saved from the benefits of visual technology outweighs any negative sides. So go ahead and use visual technology for long periods of time during the day. If youre using it as a tool youre most likely saving time. Tr wMe Staff Writer tent. The real critique 19 Lately, t j I , 1 ' ' I have had a huge probl- em. I know someone who never does any of her own school work. I have a friend in one of my classes, and she always asks to copy off my homework assignments. She also sits by me, and I have caught her cheating offof my tests, too. It doesn 't seem fair that I work hard to get good grades and she does-- n t. How should I handle this? Stressed Student Dear Stressed Student, First of all, cheating is a very serious accusation one that could cause someone to fail a class or even get kicked out of school. It does sound like you know this girls character (since she has been asking for homework help), but as for the tests, I would make sure you are completely clear that you are against her cheating. Did you also know you could be held accountable as well? Many professors consider sharing any answers (even an easy homework assignment) with someone as cheating. So discontinue loaning out your answers before you get in trouble too, and consider the following options. There are a few different ways you can handle this problem. The first thing I would suggest doing is talking to the cheater. Let her know college is different, and you wouldn't ever want her (or you!) to get in trouble. Let her know some of the possible consequences. But if she is someone you have to work with frequently and you don't want to cause an issue in that relationship, then I would move on to your next option: telling your professor. Let your professor know about the situation. Ask him or her to pay close attention during the next exam to see if he or she can catch her in the act. That way, you dont have to confront her face to face, and she can be dealt with by the proper authorities. If the professor catches her, perhaps she will be re- moved from the course. Or maybe after voicing your concerns, the teacher can move future tests into the Testing Center, which is monitored by video surveillance. When professors do that, students have the option of taking the test at their own convenience. So it is usually spread out over a few days time. Chances are you wont even see anyone from your class, let alone the one you worried about. Hopefully this will take care of the problem, but if your professor just doesnt seem to take your issue seriously, you can always talk to someone else. If you feel you discussed it with your professor but he or she didnt take care of it, you can always address it with the dean of students. Just a side note: People who would ask you to do this for them are not true friends. If you dont have assigned seats, then move! And if you do happen to have a seating chart, request a move from your professor. You can always blame faulty eyesight request a seat farther fo or closer to the board Trust me, this trick wor for me whenlcouldnt stand the stench ofafei classmate. Just tell that faux friend you coulda 3r see. You can still be polite from a distance. But cut ting ties from people this is key to success in 1J college. There will always be; people who dont doth work and try to glom or your success. As hard hard work can be, nsar important life lesson, you should learn early t Do your own.
