Show w -- 10- DIXIE SUN WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 19 LIFESTYLES Students decide who should BY AMANDA JACOBS Staff Writer Rumor has it the age old rule of only the deceased being featured on stamps is going to be lifted. According to the American Philatelic Society, one of the most official stamp collection groups in the United States, each of the nag world's its tions has own set of rules deciding who and what gets to be featured on postage. The policy of the USA is to not consider putting an individual on a stamp sooner than 10 years following his or her death. The only exception to the rule is former presidents who are given the honor of a memorial stamp on the first birthday following the year of their death. The APS said this rule stands in place since many believe the impact of a person's life cannot really be determined until it has stamp-issuin- ended. Another amendment to that is at least 0 years are required after the death to make a fair evaluation. Since stamp collecting was once a popular hobby, people in the past have lobbied to have it changed. And it looks like the U.S. Postal Service might finally be listening. Speculation is that if the rule is lifted, it would increase revenue and hopefully make stamp collecting popular once again. Since this rule might be lifted, DSC students, faculty and staff weigh in to see what they thought of the potential change and who they would want to see on a stamp if they got to decide. Shannon Broad, a transcript evaluator in enrollment services, said she thinks the new rule is a wonderful idea. Broad said there are so many people who are living who would 1 It: Physically BY ALISSA CURTO Staff Writer With obe- sity on the rise and nutrition on a steep spiral, Americans have turned to fast acting fad diets. "Anyone living could easily have their honor removed." Beatty said. Michael Bonacci, a sophomore biology major from Tooele, said he disagrees with this rule for one good reason. "Just because your not dead doesn't mean you aren't important," Bonacci said. "Ten years seems like a long time." Bonacci said interesting people would be people you might not see every day. "There are plenty of other people who have done things, like medical and scientific advances, that are still alive," Bonacci said. "Why wouldn't those people deserve to have a stamp?" Bonacci also said athletes are one group that never seems to be included. "Another type of person on stomps Ids you never see is athletes," Bonacci said. "Which is strange since they are icons for people everywhere, especially kids." Bonacci said since people often collect baseball cards and other sports memorabilia, so maybe this could help get stamp collecting back to being an interesting hobby. Erin Feller, a junior biology major from St. George, said she believes those featured on postage should be deceased. "I think the rule is good as it stands," Feller said. "This way it can serve more in honor of the person, like a memorial." Feller did say if the rule stands, maybe they could lower the length of the evaluation period. "Ten years is a pretty long time," Feller said. "Maybe they could change it to something shorter, like seven." But there is one person who she wouldn't want to see. "There are many people alive today who deserve that honor," Broad said. "But I don't think we should have an Oprah stamp. That woman already has too much power." Krissia Beatty, a freshman business major from St. George, said she doesn't really know anything about stamps, but she said she feels hesitant about the living being included. Beatty said if she could have a say in this, there is one person she certainly wouldn't feature. "I don't think people would approve if they put Obama on one," Beatty said. "Half the country hates him." Beatty said she thinks the former rule makes more sense than the new EI http:ww w.cabbage-soup-dietco- the diet requires a strict eating schedule with absolutely no cheating and could cause drastic weight loss in a matter of days, approximately 10-1- 7 pounds in one week. Its meant for patients who are potential candidates for heart surgery and need to lose weight fast, but many people (women in particular) use the diet to get in quick shape before major events ( i.e. wedding or pageant). So believe it or not, I decided to try this weight loss diet. I mean its tlie healthiest, right? You actually eat veggies, fruit and meat. Plus, how could I judge these diets if Id never tried them? Well, truth is I quit. The diet is definitely meant for individuals who actually need to lose major amounts of weight and only if its recommended by a doctor. I couldnt hold the soup down or the overload of veggies and fruits I was required to eat in order to feel somewhat full. Eater, I learned the diet ultimately is made so that youre burning more calories than youre taking in. No wonder I felt so physically mutilated.
