Teams like the Atlanta Hawks look more and more like a flash in the pan than serious competition, and the Miami Heat should be penalized for the rolling over and playing dead trick they pulled last season. Now on to the West. be interThings are going to esting this year, especially when you consider that Golden State finished last sea BY ERIK DORN Dixie Sun Staff Writer pions. Every year around this "" time, it begins: the frothing at the mouth, the juggling of stats, and the seemingly endless banter over who can do what, where and why. And you just stand there, nodding politely, pretending to have the slightest of ideas. Well, pretend no more. I am here to give you a basic understanding of the sport I love. Football fans are generally like Star Trek fans but with beer. Dont get them started, and once they have started, dont get in their way. The barrage of lingo used when talking about football could probably confuse even John Madden (not that it would take much anymore). So here goes my attempt to enlighten those who would like to understand football, according to the National Football League. NFL games are made up of four quarters. Each quarter is 15 minutes long. Every team receives three timeouts per half (if the game goes to overtime each team receives additional timeouts.) The timeouts are nontransferable, meaning you cannot save your first-ha- lf timeouts and use them in the second. At the beginning of the game, each team sends out its chosen players to call the coin flip. One team calls either heads or tails, and the winner chooses whether to kick off or receive the ball. To begin the second half of the game, the team that received the ball to start the game will kick off to the opposition. The scoring of the game is quite simple. Each touchdown is worth six points, and the team can either kick an extra point worth one point or go for two points by trying to get back into the end zone. If the offense cannot find a way to get into the end zone on any drive they can kick a field goal, which is worth three points. If the offense is backed up by their own end zone and the defense either sacks the quarterback, tackles the running back, or the QB runs out the back of the end zone, the defense scores a safety, which is worth two points. The offense has four opportunities to drive the ball 10 yards and receive a first down. They can continue to drive the ball until they score a touchdown or field goal. If the defense stops them from gaining the 10 yards, the offense is then forced to either punt the ball or igo for it on fourth down. If the defense then stops the offense from gaining the yards needed for the first down the ball is turned over on down, which means the opposing offense takes over where the ball is currently on the field. Probably the most called penalty in the NFL is offensive holding. Holding is when an offensive player keeps a defender from advancing by grasping him with his hands or arms. Offensive linemen are allowed to use their hands as long as they keep them inside the defenders shoulder pads, but if they grab outside the pads, it is a penalty. Offensive holding results in a penalty against the offending team. Another penalty that seems to be called in each game is the passing interference call. Offensive passing interference occurs when an offensive player significantly hinders a defensive players opportunity to intercept a pass or pushes off the defender to give himself an advantage. Defensive passing interference is when a defensive player illegally hinders the offensive players chance at catching the ball. Usually, grabbing the arms of the receiver or tripping the player will result in a passing interference call. Offensive passing interference results in a penalty on the offending team while a defensive passing interference call awards the offensive team the ball at the spot of the foul with an automatic first down. Even though this is a very basic run through of a few elements of football, without knowing the basics of the game you cannot truly understand the game. Football is probably one of the most entertaining sports, and being able to understand what is going on just adds to the entertainment. 10-ya- preview: West vs. East son with 48 wins and missed the playoffs. Lets move to the Pacific" division. As much as I hate to say it, the defending conference champion Los Angeles Lakers look like the team to beat yet again. After the team stole Pau Gasol from the Grizzlies the team looked unstoppable. Now throw in a healthy Andrew Bynum, a pinch of Lamar Odom, and lace it with Kobe Bryant, and you have a championship-calibe- r team. Couple this with the fact that the Phoenix Suns look just old with Shaquille ONeal leading the pack. The force last season. Dallas continued to implode in the offseason with Josh Howard going on the campaign trail and the team getting older. This brings me to my favorite team, the Rockets, who with the addition of Ron Artest have added a new dimension e to the game. The concern here is the usual: Can the fragile Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming stay healthy long enough for the team to reach their potential? Finally for the Jazz fans here, the Northwest division inside-outsid- is a two-hor- se race. Sorry, Denver fans, but what was your team thinking? After being one of the worst defen- sive teams in the league you get rid of arguably the best defender in the game right now, which is Marcus Camby. Stepping aside from the stupidity and moving to the Jazz now, Larry Miller has developed a great team centered around Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer. Williams and Boozer have the talent, but they need one more piece to step up like an Andrei Kirilenko or Mehmet Okur to be consistent as starters so the Jazz can make it back to the NBA Finals. The team in this division that will cause the most trouble for the Jazz is the Portland Trail Blazers. This team has been bad for so long and collected such amazing young talent like Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge and Greg Oden that it will be fun to see the team grow and attempt to turn the negative tradition of the team into a winning tradition. Even though the season started last night it is not too late to catch up on what happened, so align yourself with an organization and enjoy the 2008-200- 9 season. Golden State Warriors were screwed at every comer this with Baron Davis skipping town. The only team off-seas- that is vastly improved from last season is the Los Angeles Clippers. With the addition of Davis, the youth of A1 Thornton and Eric Gordon, and defensive player of the Marcus Camby, there is year no doubt this team will give others headaches. The bar is set the highest in the Southwest division. This, of course, is a problem for any of us who have a favorite team here. This division is scary because of the depth of teams like the perennial champion San Antonio Spurs. Seemingly every year they are in the finals of the Western conference with Manu Ginobili, Tim Duncan and Tony Parker' at the helm. Not to mention the New Orleans Hornets will try to capitalize off their unexpected success from last season.
