DSC head coach Danny Ortiz said he thought the mens soccer team played well, but the inability to finish the game is the problem. Defensively we are playing well, he said. We dont give up a lot of points, but offensively we arent scoring a lot of points either. We didnt take the opportunities HPU gave us. Ortiz also said the inability to finish a game is becoming a recurring It seems to be the story of the year, he said. We had opportunities to win both games, we just arent finishing. The Sea Warriors tied the game in the 50th minute when Chance Bukoske kicked in a rebound past freshman DSC goalkeeper Ben Brooksby, then Adam Rieke put HPU ahead for good in the 71st minute by maneuvering his shot past DSC junior goalkeeper Nate Pond. With the loss to Hawaii Pacific, DSC fell to on the season and in the Pacific West Conference. In Fridays game the Vulcans of the University of Hawaii-Hil- o came to Hansen Stadium to take on DSC. The Vulcans shut out DSC and scored the winning goal just nine minutes into the game. After taking a pass from Vulcan Dustin Daley, Carlos Lopezs first shot was blocked by Brooksby. However, the ball returned to Lopez for a second try, and the -1 senior forward knocked in for the winning goal. Brooksby, a sports medicine major from Hyde Park, said the teams biggest issue is the lack of communication. just arent communicating, he said. Our lack of communication is our biggest fault, and that leads to miscues We on the field. We cant read each others thoughts. Brooksby also said their finishing is another reason why they are struggling to win games. Our finishing has really struggled, he said. We are not able to find the back of the net at all. We seem to get the opportunities, we just cant capitalize on those opportunities. With the loss to the University of Hawaii-Hil- o, DSC fell to on the season and in the Pacific West Conference. The good thing was that we came back from a big deficit and really showed our heart. The softball team wont officially start their season until Feb. 6, but these fall games are good tune-up- s for the season. McIntyre said DSC has a really young team this have one more fall game on Saturday against SUU. The game will not be a normal one as the two teams will play a game. The first seven will be like normal but the last 93 will be one pitch with different companies sponsoring each inning. The game will be out at the softball field at noon. 100-inni- Freshman midfielder Eric Hofer, an undecided major from Kearns, battles for the ball 8 but still lost on Friday. Here is the issue: It is not the same team. The only people remaining on that team from the 2004 Sox are David Ortiz, Tim Wakefield and Jason Varitek. So it always makes me laugh a little when someone brings that up. Not to mention that the Rays are incredible this season, and yes, fanatic Red Sox Nation member I am, I am willing to say that. And as far as last year goes, look at the roster now. Where are Julio or Lugo, Mike Lowell Manny Ramirez? They not are even on the roster. How about this one: The time the Utah Jazz almost took it all, oh, ouch, sorry Jazz fans. Your time has come and gone. The Cougars will never sniff a title again because TCU took care of that last Thursday night (Were you watching, Cougar faithful? It was painful.). And the Jazz will keep the only tradition we know in Utah... losing. My least favorite is the college game. My roommate is a diehard Michigan Wolverines fan, and this is a real problem because they have not been relevant in a while. Yes, they may have won a national championship in 1997, but since then it has all been downhill. The big problem is that because players come and go at the college level there is no such thing as tradition. Every four years there is a new crop of players. So this means that one year you have a winning season, and the next year they are not showing your games anymore and you are sitting close to the bottom of the Big 10. . Please do not even bother to mention the Fighting Irish being a powerhouse in any discussion that Im involved with. There is no reason to continue bringing them up outside of talking about just how pathetic their tradition is. You may have had Rudy a while ago and everyone turns into Irish citizens and eats a bowl of Lucky Charms whenever you are on TV, but really, call us when you matter, and we will pretend to care again. Tradition is great and all; I mean, just ask any Yankees fan and they will be sure to tell you about the 26 World Series titles. But ask them how many of them are in this decade. Yes, the years of Mantle and Ruth are long gone and replaced with Pavano and Molina. Now if they turn into the next living e legends and I eat will my greats words with a side of all-tim- Yogi Berra. Your successes of yesteryear mean nothing this year despite what you diehard fans might think. You must know this going into the current year because in the immortal words of Boston Celtics former coach Rick Pitino, when asked about the struggles of the Celtics during his coaching career: Larry Bird is not walking through that door, fans. Kevin McHale is not walking through that door, and Robert Parish is not walking through that door. And if you expect them to walk through that door, they're going to be gray and old. The sad reality of the matter is that Jade Bytheway (former sports editor for the Dixie Sun) is not walking through that door and if he does, so what? It means absolutely nothing to this particular issue of the Dixie Sun. So of your argument is that your team has a history of winning, that is all well and good. However, you might want to check the standings this year because (gasp) you might be in last place. |
