There are 75 musicians performing pieces, Finlandia and The Ghost Train :iries Band, orchestra toot their owe horns BY ASHLEY RILLAMAS Dixie Sun Staff Writer The Dixie State College Symphony Orchestra is performing a combined concert with the Symphony Band. Paul Abegg, assistant professor of music and orchestra conductor, said the symphony's segment features Nordic composers Edvard Grieg from Norway and Jean Sibelius from Finland. The works being performing are Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 op. 46, which includes the popular Morning Mood and In the Hall of the Mountain King. Also on the program is Finlandia by Jean Sibelius, which is also a favorite, Abegg said The Kalevala, a Finnish epic, inspired many of Sibelius' works. The first to bring him fame was a symphonic poem Kullervo (1892), followed by En Saga, the Karelia Suite, and his n most work, Finlandia Finlandia. was banned by Russian authorities who were trying to control Finland at the time becaugfe of the nt well-know- musics morale-boostin- g effect on the population. Sibelius used his music to express Finnish identity. Grieg was bom in Bergen, Norway. His own performances of Norwegian music, often with his wife, established him as a leading figure in the music of his own country. In 1888 and in 1893 Grieg published the Peer Gynt Suites I and II, respectively, which contain the most popular melodies from the incidental music to a Henrik Ibsen play. Grieg continued to divide his time between composition and activity in the concert hall. He toured extensively in Europe until his poor health caught up with him and he died, in 1907, of chronic exhaustion. The symphony is stronger than it has been in recent years and promises to give a rewarding experience to those who come, Abegg said. The Symphony Band, which consists of 75 musi cians, will be performing five musical pieces along with the Symphony Orchestra on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Eccles Fine Art Center Concert Hall. American River Songs by Pierre LaPlante is a rousing setting of old American River songs. Based on traditional music of an earlier time, when the rivers and waterways were the lifelines of a growing nation. The arrangement includes Down The River, Shenandoah, also known as Across The Wide Missouri, and Stephen Fosters The Glendy Burk. Ancestral Winds is an original composition for band and mezzo-sopranIt was written by DSC student Ben Stratford and will be premiering at this concert. The piece features vocal soloist Aubree Limb, also a DSC student. Stratford also wrote the lyrics for the piece. Silverado is by Bruce Broughton and was arranged by Randol Bass. This is a powerful soundtrack written for the movie Silverado. October by Eric Whitacre consists of gentle, flowing melodies, and tone colors are the main characteristic of this piece. It captures the stillness of the month of October. Ghost Train, also by Whitacre, is. about the legend of the Ghost Train, a o. facril utuii My t supernatural machine Jtoc roars out of the night ijeen through forgotten town end; and empty canyons, a theme that is deeply ro, ,:et 10 in American folklore. Nick and Norahs Infinite Playlist fits every design for a romantic comedy a viewer could ask for. Michael Cera (Superbad and Juno) plays Nick, a high school student winding down the high school senior year and heading off to college, when his girlfriend of a whopping six months, Tris, played by Alexis Dziena (Havoc and Fools Gold) ends their relationship. This sends Nick into a downward spiral that any guy who loves music gets into. Whether or not you are willing to admit it, the majority of us has made the mistake of giving someone a mix tape. Well, Nick is dealing with his loss in the same way as he is constantly making the dreaded ex mixes. This introduces us to Norah, played by Kat Dennings (The House Bunny and Charlie Bartlett), who is a student at the same high school as Nicks former girlfriend. The tension between the two is in full view because Norah does not agree with Tris cheating ways. Nick is convinced by his band to go play a set in New York City, then find a mega-churc- h. Time was, no dregs were too low for Kathy Griffin to scrape in a bid for atten- -' tion as a Pretend to trip and fall out of a limo so a will grudgingly waste a second on her? No prob. Now, she's the star of the most popular reality program on Bravo and just won an Emmy. Griffin is like that friend who constantly goes over the top, but is so infectiously amusing that you never get annoyed enough to call her on it. You just sit back and let her rip - and rip, and rip, on pop icon after pop icon at the speed of light. She's trying to hold on to her status, but she must realize by now that we just let her get away with it because she makes us laugh really, really hard.
