The Dixie mens soccer team will play Hawaii Pacific University on Oct. 15 at 4:30 p.m. junior Shane pro- fessional sports, and the National Hockey League season is no exception. The top four teams this year are (in my opinion) the same teams that made the finals last season. From the Western Conference: The Detroit Red Wings and die Dallas Stars. From the Eastern Conference: The Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins. The Pittsburgh Penguins Last season the Penguins lost to the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Championship, but this year look for them to take it all. There were a few key players who were let go over tire summer. Left wing Ryan Malone and right wing Marian Hossa both left the Penguins in free agency. Hossa signed with tire Detroit Red Wings while Malone signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Penguins acquired right wing Miroslav Satan and left wing Matt Cooke along with three others to help this team achieve the greatness drey came so close to achieving last season. With centers Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin returning this season as the anchors of the team, both Satan and Cooke will need to step up their roles as Crosby and Malkins wings. Last year dre Penguins scored 102 points and were the No. 2 seed. This REASONS TO STAY IN SCHOOL i.' MARKETABILITY The Philadelphia Flyers Not a lot has changed in dre offseason widr the Philadelphia Flyers. They were unable to make a big splash this summer because of salary cap concerns, but drey did bring in two decent players in defenseman Bryan Berard and center Glen Metropolit. They will replace center Jim Dowd and defenseman Jaroslav Modry, who were among five players let go by dre Flyers over the summer. I would predict a similar result this year from a team that has not changed all drat much. It is going to be a very competitive Atlantic Division again tiris year, so it could be a very close finish. The Flyers are a good team, tirough drey are stuck in their current roster because of salary issues, but should be one of tire elite teams this season. Prediction: Lose in tire finals to tire Pittsburgh ill ',MHI i Pittsburgh Penguins The Detr oit Red Wings History has shown drat it is quite difficult for a Stanley Cup finalist to find its w'ay back to the Stanley Cup. If any team could do it, however, it would be the Detroit Red Wings (they repeated in 97 and 98). The only problem in trying to repeat is the Cup Hangover. Players have a shorter summer and may not have dre motivation to win the cup, but if the Red Wings can stay healthy I see no hangover this coming season. Tire acquisition of Hossa and goaltender Ty Conklin as well as the resigning of defenseman Brad Stuart will definitely strengthen a team that lost goaltender Dominik Hasek and leftright winger Dallas Drake to retirement. I just dont think dre Red Wings can repeat. They have done it before, but I doubt they can recover from the loss of two coaches and the retirement of Drake and Hasek. Prediction: Lose in the finals to the Dallas Stars Many people in St. George might not care about tire NHL, but open your horizons and take in a hockey game on TV this season, or even better, go see one in person. Because really, there is nothing better than seeing two grown men slug it out on freshly resurfaced ice. 15-2- losophy. They are a team that has a great defense and is rarely out of a game. He is tire kind of player who fits what they do on the ice. He is versatile, he can move up and down tire lineup, and is difficult to play against. He is a 0 guy who can score goals, which fits in with the Stars score by committee phi- ' i NHL. Left wing Loui Eriksson is a young player who showed a lot of promise last season. He is always around the net, and had 14 goals and 17 assists last season. could see him scoinrg 25 goals tiris season. Prediction: Lose in Stanley Cup Championship to the year I expect dre same.
