The tutoring center is a priveledge given to the students of DSC by Rachel Glidden Dixie Sun Staff Writer One of the busiest, undiscovered resources at Dixie State College is the Tutoring Center, located in the North Instructional Building across the street from the library With doors wide open, the tutoring center welcomes any student who needs help with his or her class work Its part of their privileges of being a student at Dixie College, said Susan Garner, Director of the tutoring center We have a variety of subjects that we tutor in there, and (because of) drop in tutoring you can come in at any time and receive tutoring in math, and in the afternoon in math and biology, physiology, anatomy or just about any subject we can find a tutor for if there is a need for it Last year more than 12,000 students logged in more than hours at the tutoring center Garner explained that most students did not only come once, but made return trips to the center Some teachers arranged for small groups of students to meet with a tutor, and other students showed up on their own for help 10,000 Its just kind of mce to have someone hold your hand or at walk you through a problem that youre having, said Garner Its also nice to be able to bounce ideas off of a tutor when you feel like maybe youve got the right idea but you want to talk to them about it Brianna Larmore has been a math tutor at the center for five years She started working there because she needed a job and had taken some college classes She continues to tutor because she loves workmg with people We get the people who realhere, and we get the people who are just ly want to be cramming before a test, said Larmore We get people who are just having a really bad day, and we get people who arent having a really bad day The Tutormg Center is striving to become a more professional workplace in a relaxed environment where any student can come to receive help Learning doesnt happen m a vacuum, said Garner Theres a lot of difference from learning from a peer - a peer is sometimes the best teacher Its not like an instructor m a class that you feel intimidated by, a peer group is friendly As a tutor, Larmour encouraged students not to feel apprehensive about coming I have taken every for help math class here, she I am now a explained tutor, but you know what, I got tutoring in two math classes So nobodys per your math, tomorrow its the umverse To be intimidated by it or feel like you dont need to do it (demes) yourself of a great service A great service and a help Wade Henderson, a DSC student studying physiology, comes to the tutoring center because I need help I did study with a group outside of class, and I did this so its different ways to look at it Im just trying to take advantage of it More students are attending Dixie than ever recorded in the college's history by Mandolyn Pieece Dixie Sun News Editor On September 22, the DSC enrollment figures for the fall 2003 semester were The statistics announced showed that the college has grown since last year for both total headcount and equivalency (FTE) figures full-tim- e We have such a great, friendly group of tutors m there, said Garner They are certainly supportive of the students, but theyre also supportive of Its fun to see one another them mteract, because they dont always know the answers, but they find the answers Garner wants students to know that even if the tutoring center does not have a tutor for the class that students need, they should still come in and sign up for one If enough students are asking for help in a particular subject, they will do their best to find a tutor The Tbtormg Center recently added physiology to their schedule, and plan to add accountmg to the schedule this week They are also planning to add more tutors for DSCs four-yea- r students including accounting, economics, business math, various sciences and health services hard work goes on, said Garner, but you hear some noise m there once m a while because learning causes noise If its noisy m there that means learmngs Sometimes taking place there is quite a buzz going on, and thats excitmg Its good to hear Another explanation, maj be the increasing number of four year programs offered through the col lege Enrollments in our four year programs are on the Alletto explained rise, I think that this trend will continue through the near future As long as we con tinue to provide a solid quality educational expe rience, students will be knocking at the door" Enrollments in our four-ye- Qay ? programs ar are on the rise.
