"Happy Single Awareness Day!" read the small print on the Valentine which had been hung carefully on my door, when I got home last Friday. For the past three years, I have staged a formal protest against this seemingly harmless holiday. All romantic factors aside, how many observers of this holiday actually know it's origin. Valentine's Day has been attributed to several roots. Many historians believe it dates back to the A.D 200's, to Romes Claudius II who believed that single men made better soldiers and therefore forbade young men to marry. But, it is told that there was a priest Valentine, who despite the proclamation, would perform marriage services. Valentine was executed on Feb. 14 around A.D. 269 and Pope Saint Gelasius named Feb. 14 St. Valentine's day. There are many traditions that have evolved throughout the ages. Young women in the 1700's pinned bay leaves to the corners of their pillows, which was thought to send them dreams of their future husbands. The oldest known tradition though is that a woman's name would be written on a piece of paper, and a young man would draw it. made in the early 1800's. Valentine's Day is has become the chance to monetarily prove how much we love another. Floral shops and greeting card companies make fortunes off of young lovers. Along with Christmas, Valentine's Day is the second most depressing holiday of the year.
