She enjoyed interacting with students everyday she was in the library. Shumway became a librarian because of her love for books and the technology of this generation. When she came to Dixie, the library didn't have a single computer, she said. "Now, we have come full circle to being completely computerized in almost everything we do," she said. Under her direction, access to the library collection went from the antiquated card files to comtemporary computerization - the first library Audrey Shumway, library director, will retire on April 30. She came to Dixie College on Feb. 15, 1982, and has worked at the library for 15 years, the last 10 as library director. Prior to moving with her husband, Ted, to St. George, they lived in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Audrey was employed as the media coordinator for a middle school in Mesa. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Utah, and later consummated a master's degree at Arizona State University. As library director, she in the state to become fully automated. The new library facility was named the Val A. Browning Library. After retiring, she doesn't know exactly everything she wants to do, but she does know she wants to pursue her hobbies, do some outdoor activities, and maybe a liitle bit of community service. Leaving will not be easy for her. She made herself a little niche and some good friends. " I'll really miss it," she said. "I feel like I'm giving one of my children away. But I've had a wonderful staff, and I'm leaving with many happy memories." By NIKKI CLAYTON CONTRIBUTING WRITER Hunger! Something that many people experience every day of their lives. It was estimated that in December 1996, 906 people were in need of food in Washington County. Dixie College VIP Club wants to help those people who are in need. The VIP Service Club is sponsoring the first ever Awareness Week with Hunger as its theme. There are many activities that will be taking place and we look forward to helping the needy. To start tire week off, VIP services placed 1,500 Red Hunger Flags on Encampment Mall symbolizing tire hungry adults and children of Washington County. Tuesday, Feb. 18 through Thursday, Feb. 20, a canned food Donation Booth will be set up in the Gardner Center. Available at tlie booth will be a Hunger Awareness Newsletter on Washington County to help inform you of the Hunger issues locally. On Thursday, Feb. 20, there will be a free cookie bar to all those who come into the Gardner Center to donate at the booth. To end die week, on Saturday, Feb. 22, a dance will be held at 9 p.m. in the Gardner Center Ballroom. Admission will be diree cans of food or $3. So get your cans ready and come participate in Dixie College's first ever Awareness Week. Lets get out to show our support AT DIXIE COLLEGE to our Softball and Baseball teams this week.
