The athletic budget for the 1995-9school year projects bringing in nearly $500,000 in gate money, student fees, spon6 sorship, state appropriations and waivers. Where does all this money go? According to the Athletic Department, the money gets divided up M fund football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball and the various organizations on campus supporting them. Football pulls nearly $147,000 from these funds, over four times more than baseball or women's basketball. Doesn't sound fair, you say? There is a lot more to look at than just numbers. The funds are divided up according to seveial variables as fairly as they can be. Football pulls five times as much money as baseball in tuition waivers because football carries 100 players on the team n and grants about 22 scholarships. Baseball carries only 20 players and grants only 6 full tuition waivers. "The state allows an institution ten percent of its tuition for tuition waivers," Athletic Director Karl Brooks said. "That leaves Dixie with about 300 to divide among the campus, most of which go to academic tuition waivers." Athletics claim approximately 61 to divide again among six different teams. In accordance to Title 9, Dixie is shifting to add funding for women's teams. "Not because the law says we have to, but because we think it's right," Brooks said. Women's sports currently qualify for $66,000 while men's sports total $268,000 in funding.
