Show Page 4 DIXIE SUN December 9, 1987 Rebels crush Pirates in Rotary Bowl game. The Pirates received to open the game, but they were shut down by the Rebel defense on three plays. Dixie struck first on their first play from scrimmage, Neole Kapele hit a streaking Brent Nyberg for a 91 yard TD. This play seemingly set the tempo of the game for both teams. The PAT missed and the Rebels lead Independence struck back on their next series as Ricky Johnson rambled in from 12 yards out. Kapele then lead the Rebels to their next score as he avoided massive rush to hit Kelvin Minifee for a 30 yard TD. The score was 13-- 6 for Dixie at that point. Early in the second quarter, the Pirates tied the score as their quarterback Mike Millis hit his tight end, Felix Williams, for a 22 yard TD. For the rest of the half it slowed down considerably as the defenses tightened. Ruiz hit a 40 yard field goal to end the scoring for the half. Dixie lead 3 at the 6-- 0. Burley then failed to hit his open receivers, but on a crucial 3rd and 10 he finally alligned his sites and completed a 46 yard pass to Brent Nyberg. This set up the play of the game.
